Allen R. Baum
President
Email
Allen is the current LES (USA & Canada) President. He was previously the Vice President, Administration for two years and the Trustee for the Professional Development Series and Meeting Content for one year each. He chaired the recent LES Spring Meeting 2005 in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is a frequent speaker for the LES professional development courses.
Allen has additional professional affiliations with the American Bar Association and The American Intellectual Property Law Association. He is a patent attorney and Partner with Hutchison Law Group, PLLC in Raleigh, North Carolina. His practice focuses on life sciences companies. He is a former pharmaceutical analytical research chemist for DuPont Merck and Smith-Kline Beecham. Allen’s expertise is in counseling pharmaceutical/
biotech companies, opinion drafting, negotiation of licenses, litigation, and patent procurement. He holds a BSCh. from Muhlenberg College and earned his JD from Widener
University School of Law.

Dwight C. Olson

Immediate Past-President, Mr. Olson has served consecutive terms as President-Elect and President, three terms as Vice President including Regional VP, USA, and VP of External Affairs. He is also serving his first term as Vice Chair of the LESI Long Range Planning Committee. He was co-founder and Co-Chair of the LES Internet Committee and served as Co-Chairperson for the LES Online Committee. Additional
involvements include 2003 Annual Meeting Chair, 2000 Winter Meeting Chair and 1998 Annual Meeting Publicity Chair.
Dwight is Executive Vice President for TAEUS International with corporate offices in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Dwight was founder of DSI, now a subsidiary of Iron Mountain
Inc., the world’s largest records management company. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Teaching Certificate for Math and Chemistry from Augsburg College
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended post-graduate computer science courses at the University of Minnesota.
Thomas A. Picone

Dr. Thomas Picone is currently President-Elect of LES (USA & Canada), having
served as the Chair of the Healthcare Sector from 2000-2001. He is a regular speaker at LES meetings, is Co-Chair of the LES International Healthcare Committee and has been a Trustee since 1999. He is seeking President-Elect for 2007.
Dr. Picone is an executive with over 25 years of pharmaceutical experience. Most of his career was at Abbott (17 years), although he has worked at Pharmacia, Oxford Bio-science Partners and currently at Schering Plough.
He holds a bachelor of arts in Psychology/Biology from St. Michaels College in Burl-ington, Vermont. He received his MA in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Hartford, Connecticut at Storrs in 1980.
Michael J. Lasinski

In addition to being LES Treasurer, Mr. Lasinski holds or has held various other positions within LES (USA & Canada), including: Treasurer 2004 and 2005, Trustee of Technology Transfer Seminars, Trustee of Online Service, Co-Chair of the Michigan Chapter, Co-Chair of the Valuation & Taxation Committee, and Program Chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting in Chicago. Mr. Lasinski has spoken internationally on the topic of intellectual property valuation.
Mr. Lasinski is a Managing Director at Ocean Tomo and is in charge of their valuation business.
Previous positions include Executive Director at the Center for Applied Innovation (CAI) and Vice President at CRA, International. His education includes both an MBA and BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Lasinski is a licensed C.P.A. in the state of Illinois and the former Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property Owners Organization’s Valuation and Taxation Committee.
Walter G. Copan

Within LES (USA & Canada) Dr. Walter Copan has been Vice President for
Member Interests,
Trustee for Mentoring, and chaired the LES Energy, Chemicals and Materials
Committee and the Industry-University-Government-Interface Committee. In
LES International he was Chair for the LESI Chemicals, Energy and Environment
Committee and is currently Chair of the Industry-University-Government-Interface
Committee. Walt is also an international delegate to LESI.
Dr. Copan is Executive Vice President—North American Operations and Chief
Technology Officer at Clean Diesel Technologies, Inc. Prior to joining Clean
Diesel, he was with the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy in the capacity
of Principal Licensing Executive. Before his decision to join NREL, Dr. Copan
was Managing Director, Technology Transfer and Licensing for The Lubrizol Corporation.
His undergraduate degrees from Case Western Reserve University are in Chemistry
and Music.
He chose chemistry and business over the option of a musical career (opera,
vocal performance)
and received his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University.
François Painchaud
Regional Vice President, Canada

For the past two years, Mr. Painchaud has been Regional Vice President,
Canada and prior to that was involved as Trustee at various levels
of the Society’s activities. He was Arrangements Chair for the 2004 Boston
Annual Meeting. He is also active in the Canadian Bar Association. He serves
on the Board of Directors of various technology-driven private and public companies.
Admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1986, François Painchaud is a partner
in Léger Robic Richard,
Lawyers, Patent and Trade-Mark Agents (“Robic”). In charge of the
business law group of Robic, he specializes in the preparation and negotiation
of technology transfers and in the fields of commercial and corporate law,
such as joint venture and M&A.
At the academic level, Mr. Painchaud is an adjunct professor at McGill
University, teaching “Trade Secrets and Technology Transfers” in
the Complex Legal Transactions II course. He has also contributed to the
Robic-Léger, Canadian Trade-Marks Act Annotated and the Canadian Copyright
Act Annotated.
Thomas J. Filarski

Mr. Filarski is serving his second term as Secretary
for LES (USA & Canada).In 2004-2005, he served as Regional Vice President,
USA. Other records of key involvement in the Society include: Vice President
of Communications, 2003-2004; Chair for the 2002 Annual Meeting in Chicago;
Co-Chair of the 2001-03 Meeting Coordination Committee; Chair for the Publications
Committee, 1998-2000; and Annual and Seasonal Meeting Committees
for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999.
Tom became a partner in Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in 1992, after joining
them in 1986. He practices litigation and counseling in patent, trade secret
and related unfair competition law on a variety of inventions. Tom holds a
JD from De Paul University College of Law; BA in Chemistry and MS in Chemical
Engineering from Michigan Technological University.
Margaret Moizel

Ms. Moizel is currently Vice-President, Admin. She is also the Co-Chair for the upcoming 2006 Annual Meeting
in New York City. Her record of key involvement
in LES (USA & Canada) includes Chairperson of the LES Audit Committee;
Arrangements Chair for the New York Spring Meeting 2000 and 2004; and Entertainment
Chair for the LES 2003 Annual Meeting in San Diego. In addition, she is an
International Delegate at LESI meetings and Co-Chair for the annual meetings.
Peggy is President of IP Compliance Management, specializing in licensing
management and royalty auditing. Peggy has been involved in licensing for more
than 25 years, starting her intellectual property career in the entertainment
industry.
Ada C. Nielsen

Ada Nielsen is currently serving as the
Vice President for Communications. She was Program Chair for the Winter 2005
Meeting in Denver, is a Trustee of the Licensing Foundation
and led the development of the Respect Rights Web site for the Foundation.
Ada has been responsible for oversight for the Fundamentals and Intermediate
level courses, developing
the intellectual asset management modules for both courses, teaching frequently
for PDS, and helping to pilot webinars for the Education Committee. Having
been Vice-Chair of Education for LES International (2001-2002), she serves
as chair for the Chemicals, Energy and Environment Working Group and as an
International Delegate.
Ada is Manager, Commercial Development and Intellectual Asset Manager in
areas of Exploration and Production for BP America, Inc. She has a strong track
record in identifying
and extracting value from non-commercial inventions as well as developing new
products and new businesses. She earned an AB in Chemistry from Wellesley College,
an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Chicago Graduate School
of Business,
and studied theoretical physical chemistry in graduate programs at Tulane University
and Dartmouth College.
Brian R. Oliver

Brian Oliver is a frequent lecturer at LES workshops and add-on sessions and has taught the PDS Fundamentals - Course 102 in Chicago. Brian is the Chairperson of the upcoming 2007 LES Spring Meeting in Atlanta and his record of key involvement in LES also includes 2003 LES Spring Meeting Chair in Philadelphia and former Chicago Chapter Chair (2000-2002).
Brian is currently Director, Business Development-Intellectual Property at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME). In this role, Brian is working with others at the CME in developing
and maintaining CME’s overall intellectual property program. Mr. Oliver holds a BS from Indiana University and an MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.
Paul A. Roberts

Mr. Roberts has been active in LES (USA & Canada) since 1996 and an LES Trustee since 2004. As the Industrial Sector Trustee, Paul regularized sector interaction with the Board and standardized Sector activities/communications to their respective members, which has enabled the Sectors to focus more on substantive matters. Previously, Paul was the LES Trustee for Web site matters and introduced Web site functionality which has enabled LES to more efficiently coordinate content and approvals for organizing LES meetings. Prior to that, Paul completed two terms as the Chair for the High Technology Sector (HTS). He has had significant involvement
with both selecting and organizing all levels of HTS-endorsed content for LES meetings and has also been an LES workshop and add-on speaker.
Currently, Paul is a Global Intellectual Property Counsel at Accenture for five divisions, where he works on: innovation identification, worldwide patent prosecution and intellectual asset management.
Additional previous experience includes: management of intellectual property assets through the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of a former Fortune 500 company; significant law firm experience
on patent, trademark and copyright matters; and work as a United States Patent Examiner.
Paul holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Maryland at College Park and a law degree from Whittier Law School, in addition to an Intellectual Property Certificate from Franklin Pierce Law School.
John C. Paul

John currently chairs the International Committee for LES (USA & Canada), and
chairs the LESI Committee of the Americas. He led the Washington, D.C. Local
Chapter during the last decade, chaired the Professional Development Committee
during the launch of the IAM program, and organized speakers and arrangements
for various LES annual and seasonal meetings. For many years he coauthored
a quarterly review of recent developments in licensing law for the Licensing
Executives Society journal, les Nouvelles. He has also held leadership roles
in the ABA, the AIPLA, and the ASME, and taught patent law as an adjunct faculty
member of Catholic University.
John is a patent attorney and partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Finnegan Henderson Farabow Garrett & Dunner and leads the firm’s IP Management Section. He has over twenty-five years of experience in IP licensing, litigation, and prosecution, and currently focuses on licensing, strategic IP management and due diligence investigations. John holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Brown University and a law degree from Case Western Reserve University.
Nila D. Bhakuni

Nila Bhakuni is serving her second year as Trustee
for New Membership. She is past Chair of the Nanotechnology Committee in the
High Tech Sector and past chair of the Chemicals Energy and Materials Sector.
Her current position is Director of the Office of Technology Transfer at
Rice University in Houston, Texas. She was previously in Technology Transfer
at Harvard and Carnegie Mellon. Nila also has 10 years of experience in research
and development as an engineer at Alcoa, Inc. in the area of product design
and manufacturing.
Nila holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron, an
MS in Mechanical
Engineering from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon
University.
Phillip W. Barnett

Phil Barnett is currently serving as Vice President for Education. He has
been active in LES since 1990, first in Committee Leadership for the Chemicals,
Environmental, and Materials (CEMC) Industry Sector, and then as Trustee for
the Professional Development Series. He has participated in several international
conferences, and is a frequent invited speaker on topics in intellectual asset
management and licensing. He has been both a content
contributor and faculty participant for the Society’s successful Professional
Development
Series, and co-chaired several LES meeting program offerings.
He is currently Operations Director for the Knowledge Services Organization
(KSO) of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (USA) where he manages organizational development
and special projects relating to PwC’s critical internal knowledge and
intellectual asset management business processes. He also manages key shared
services across the KSO’s functional departments. He has spent the last
year working with the managing partner and his leadership to create a new consolidated
research function, as well as new editor-ial and content management functions
within PwC’s large Information Services Group. Phil continues to advise
PwC partners and clients in the areas of process performance improvement relating
to intellectual asset management, IP valuation, IP-related audit, market research
and new product development.
Phil joined LES while serving The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan
as Intellectual Asset Manager for the Epoxy Products and Intermediates Business.
He received both BS and MS degrees from Stephen F. Austin State University,
Texas.
William J. Fields

William Fields has served as chair
in several LES positions. He originated and chaired the Aerospace and Transportation
Committee in 1997; worked on both of the San Diego National Meetings, most
recently as Chair of Athletics in 2003. He also co-chaired the Add-Ons Committee
for the Palm Desert Meeting in 2001 and San Antonio in 1999.
Bill is a Licensing Consultant doing business as WJF Consulting in the areas
of IP review, valuation, business development, and prospecting. Prior to that
he was the VP of Licensing for Science Applications International Corp.
He holds a BS degree in Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West
Point and a Masters of Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Arizona.
Gary M. Nath

Gary Nath is serving his second term as Trustee for
Marketing. He has served as National Sponsorship Chair, as well as Sponsorship
and Publicity Chair for both annual and seasonal LES meetings. He was Chair
of the 2006 LES Winter Meeting in Pasadena and serves as an International Delegate.
He has conducted over 50 worldwide lectures on IP licensing, patent enforcement,
international filing strategies, and due diligence investigations.
Gary is a patent attorney and the founder and Managing Partner of Nath & Associates,
an intellectual property law firm with offices in Washington and San Diego.
His practice specializes in strategic positioning of patent portfolios for
a wide variety of technologies and clients. Prior to entering private practice,
he was Patent Counsel for Warner-Lambert, NL Industries and FMC Corporation.
Mr. Nath received a JD from American University, Washington, D.C., in Biochemistry.
He was awarded a BS degree in Biology and Chemistry from Rider University,
and has been certified in Molecular Biology and Immunology in 2005.
Gerald J. Siuta

Dr. Gerald Siuta is serving his second year as Trustee
for Committees. He has also served as the Workshop Chair for the 2000 Annual
Meeting in Toronto, the 2002 Annual Meeting in Chicago
and the 2005 Annual Meeting in Phoenix, and as the Program Chair for the 2004
Annual Meeting in Boston.
Gerry is the President of Siuta Consulting, Inc., a pharmaceutical licensing
consulting firm established in 1995 to provide worldwide in-and out-licensing
services to pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, universities
and research institutes. Prior to starting his consulting business, he spent
20 years in the pharmaceutical industry with the Medical Research
Division of American Cyanamid Company.
Gerry received his BA in Chemistry from Hunter College of The City University
of New York and his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Fordham University. He is
a member of AUTM where he served as Vice President for Affiliate Members, the
American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi–The Scientific Research Society of
North America and Phi Lambda Upsilon–The National Honorary Chemical Society.
James C. Vlazny
Trustee, Mentoring

Dr. James Vlazny is nominated for his second term as
Trustee for Mentoring. He presently serves as Chair of the LES Mentoring Committee,
teaches different parts of the LES Professional
Development Series on licensing, and has served as past Co-Chair of the Chicago
Local Chapter. Dr. Vlazny has written articles, chaired workshops, and given
many presentations on various aspects of pharmaceutical and biotech licensing
around the world.
James is founder and President of Licensing International, Inc. (LINC), a
company he set up in 1991 to be of service to organizations interested in licensing-in
or licensing-out new pharma/biotech products or technologies.
Previously, he was Director of the Corporate Licensing Department at Abbott
Laboratories. James was awarded a BS degree in Chemistry from Loyola University,
Chicago, a doctorate degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, and an MBA degree from the University of Chicago.
Glenn Wheeler

Glenn Wheeler is nominated for his second term as Trustee
for LES Online. He is acting as the Treasurer and Arrangements Chair for the
Annual Meeting in New York in 2006. Last year he was a member of the Arrangements
Committee for the Annual Meeting in Phoenix. He has past experience in that
capacity as the Arrangements Chair for the Annual Meeting in San Diego
in 2003. Previously, he was the Tours Chair for the Annual Meeting in Palm
Desert in 2001 and Arrangements Chair for the seasonal meeting in Tucson in
2000.
Glenn is the Vice President of Engineering for TAEUS International Corp.
performing technical
investigations and reverse engineering in the fields of high technology systems,
integrated circuits and software to chemicals and biomed. In addition, he directs
and takes part in litigation
support, prior art searching, patent valuation and patent brokering.
He holds a BSE from Arizona State University, specializing in electronics
systems and design and has a background in physics and chemistry.
Joseph S. Zakrzewski

Mr. Zakrzewski is nominated for Trustee for Industrial Sectors; in 2005 he served as Trustee for New Offerings. He is a frequent speaker for LES professional development courses and has additional professional affiliations with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Joe is Chief Operating Officer of Reliant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Prior to joining Reliant, Mr. Zakrzewski spent over 17 years with Eli Lilly and Company in a variety of capacities including research, manufacturing, finance, and, for the past nine years, corporate business development. Most recently, he was Vice President, Corporate Business Development.
He has a BS in Chemical Engineering and an MS in Biochemical Engineering from Drexel University and received an MBA in Finance from Indiana University.
Michael Q. Lee

Mike Lee’s involvement with LES includes chair of the LES Winter Meeting 2007 in San Francisco, and chair-elect of the Software Committee in the High Tech Sector. He is also Plenary Co-Chair for the 2006 Annual Meeting in New York City, and Add-on Chair for the 2007 Annual Meeting in Vancouver. Mike served as Arrangements Chair for the 2006 Winter Meeting (Pasadena); Workshop Co-Chair for the 2005 Annual Meeting (Phoenix); and Program Co-Chair for the 2005 Spring Meeting (Raleigh).
Mike is a patent attorney and director with Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. in Washington, D.C. Mike specializes in the protection and transfer of intellectual property rights. He has particular experience with computer, business method, e-commerce and software-related
inventions, with 18 years of experience patenting inventions in these technologies. Mike earned his JD from Georgetown University, and holds MSEE and BSEE degrees from the Universities of Maryland and Virginia, respectively.
Pamela R. Demain

Pamela Demain has been a member of the Healthcare Committee since 2003 and involved in planning healthcare aspects of LES Meetings. She has also been an active participant at meetings as a speaker and attendee.
Pam Demain is Executive Director, Corporate Licensing at Merck & Co., Inc. She has been at Merck for twenty-five years. For twelve years, she has been responsible for negotiating transactions with companies, universities and institutions worldwide. Prior to her current position, Ms. Demain was in charge of the Business Information & Research Group in the Worldwide Human Health Marketing area of Merck, providing strategic decision support for new and in-line products.
Pamela’s pharmaceutical career began in the natural products laboratory of Gruppo Lepetit, an Italian pharmaceutical
company, which was then a subsidiary of the Dow Chemical
Company. Ms. Demain is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and holds an MBA in International Business from The American University in Washington, D.C.
Peter M. Ross
Trustee, Local Chapters, Canada

Peter has been a member of LES (USA & Canada) since 2002, and is currently active in the Toronto chapter. He has participated in a number of licensing seminars to highlight the unique commercial challenges encountered in university-industry transactions, and is a sub-committee member of the Conference Board of Canada’s “Leaders’ Roundtable on Commercialization” in connection with university/industry partnerships.
Peter is Legal Manager to Research Western at The University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, and supports technology transfer and licensing initiatives, management of intellectual property rights, ethics review and negotiations for sponsored research opportunities.
He is a former General Counsel to a publicly-traded, real property company operating throughout Canada. Peter holds an Honours Business Administration degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Bachelors of Law from Western, a Masters of Laws (Intellectual Property) from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, and a certificate in alternative dispute resolution through the University of Windsor. He sits on the advisory board of a number of privately-held Canadian corporations.
Catherine E. Vorwald

Ms. Vorwald has served in various key positions in LES. In addition to being the founding Chapter Chair of the Maryland Local Chapter (Best New Chapter Award, 2005), she has also been a workshop coordinator for the past three (‘04, ‘05, and ‘06) Annual Meetings, was on the Licensing Foundation Day 2006 Planning Committee, and an LES speaker in 1988.
Ms. Vorwald is the Director of Business Development at The University of Maryland, Baltimore
Office of Research and Development. She joined UMB to work on corporate/faculty collaboration stemming from the UMB BioPark project. Formerly, she was Director of Business
Development at a small recombinant protein manufacturing start-up. She has also held positions in the licensing and/or marketing departments for The Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems (now BD Biosciences), UC San Francisco, and the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
Ms. Vorwald holds an MBA in Finance from The Johns Hopkins University as well as a Master
of Science Degree and a Bachelor Degree in Biological Sciences from Georgetown University
and the University of California, Santa Cruz, respectively.
Brian P. O'Shaughnessy

Brian P. O'Shaughnessy is a shareholder in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, P.C., and resident in its Alexandria, VA office. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Department of Chemistry, Rochester Institute of Technology; and a J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law. Mr. O'Shaughnessy is a registered patent attorney with twenty years' experience in intellectual property law, both in-house and in private practice. He advises clients in licensing intellectual property, enforcing and defending intellectual property rights, and in securing intellectual property rights domestically and internationally, particularly in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries. Mr. O'Shaughnessy writes and lectures on legal matters relating to intellectual property, and is an active member of the Licensing Executives Society, the Intellectual Property Owners Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Bar Association.
