Microsoft Corporation
Title: Microsoft IP Licensing: Open for Business
Speaker: W. Glen Johnson - Senior Attorney
Glen Johnson is a Senior Attorney currently managing the outbound IP licensing
legal team at Microsoft where he oversees outbound IP deal support and counseling
on a range of licensing matters. Previously, Glen served as lead divisional
patent counsel for Microsoft’s consumer divisions (including Xbox) and
digital media, where responsibilities included strategic Windows Media licensing,
in/out technology licensing and patent pooling efforts. Prior to joining
Microsoft in 2003, Glen served as in-house IP counsel for Nortel’s Enterprise
Networks divisions in Texas and S-MOS systems (a Seiko Epson affiliate) in
Silicon Valley, and in private high technology practice with Stoel Rives (Seattle)
and Pravel Hewitt (Houston). Glen holds a BS in Electrical Engineering
from Southern Methodist (Dallas - 1988) and a JD from Baylor (Waco, TX - 1992), admitted
in Texas and Washington, and registered to practice before the US Patent and
Trademark Office.
Speaker: Ellyn Foltz - Director, Customer Advocacy
and Intellectual Property Licensing
Customer Advocacy and IP Licensing is a new group within Microsoft's Legal
and Corporate Affairs organization (LCA) that regularly meets with Microsoft’s
largest global customers and partners to discuss IP issues, challenges and
opportunities. Ellyn brings to this newly created position over 20 years
of senior sales, consulting and general management experience in the computer
industry.
Prior to joining LCA, Ellyn led the worldwide sales and technical team dedicated
to one of Microsoft’s largest and most complex global accounts, Altria
Group, the world’s largest consumer packaged goods firm. During
Ellyn’s time as Global Client Executive, Altria signed a worldwide licensing
agreement with Microsoft to cover over 100,000 global desktops and also signed
the largest global agreement Microsoft has inked to date for Digital Rights
Management. Before becoming Global Client Executive for Altria Group,
Ellyn was the General Manager of Enterprise Services for Microsoft’s
South Region, overseeing four consulting practices whose combined organizations
had over 100 Microsoft Consulting Services professionals serving customers
in ten states.
Before joining Microsoft in 1998, Ellyn was vice president of sales and marketing
for an East Coast-based Microsoft solutions provider and before that, worked
at IBM Corporation and Digital Equipment Corporation in sales, consulting and
general management positions in the Mid-Atlantic area.
Ellyn holds a BA from the University of Richmond and a master’s degree
from the University of Virginia. She and her family live in Atlanta.

Speaker: Scott M. Frank - President
of BellSouth Intellectual Property Management Corporation and BellSouth Intellectual
Property Marketing Corporation
Scott is the President of BellSouth Intellectual Property Management Corporation
and BellSouth Intellectual Property Marketing Corporation. He is responsible
for the identification, development, protection, management and marketing of
BellSouth’s intellectual property company-wide.
Scott joined BellSouth in 1998 and led the effort in forming the BellSouth
Intellectual Property companies, which has grown from a handful of employees
to approximately 40 employees. By leveraging BellSouth’s intellectual
property, Scott’s team has added hundreds of millions of dollars to BellSouth’s
bottom-line. When Scott started in 1998, BellSouth had less than 50 patents
issued in its first fourteen years. Today, just seven years later, BellSouth
now has 500 patents and is filing hundreds of patent applications annually.
Prior to joining BellSouth, Scott practiced intellectual property law in Atlanta
at Troutman Sanders LLP for 7 years. Prior to Troutman Sanders,
Scott was an electrical engineer with Nortel for 5 years, and a computer systems
analyst with AT&T for 2 years.
Scott received his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, and
his Law Degree and Masters in Business from Georgia State University.
Scott lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and is married with four children.
Speaker: Carol Beckham - Vice President, BellSouth
Intellectual Property Marketing and Management Crops.
Carol Beckham has been with BellSouth for 35 years in a variety of positions
including customer service, network and Supply Chain Management. Carol
negotiated complex software and development contracts for BellSouth and later
managed the BellSouth Software Acquisition Group, the in-licensing arm of BellSouth. In
the early ’90, Carol worked with the BellSouth legal department to create
and implement intellectual property policies throughout BellSouth Corporation
and the affiliate companies. In September of 1998, she was named
Vice President of the BellSouth Intellectual Property Marketing and Management
Corporations when they were established as separate entities in BellSouth. Her
current responsibilities include negotiating intellectual property rights for
BellSouth, overseeing the Marketing and licensing of BellSouth technology and
patents to third parties as well as setting and implementing policy and the
protection of BellSouth IP. Carol is also an active member of the Licensing
Executive Society and serves as the past Chapter Co-Chair for Atlanta.
Speaker: Michael Bishop - Chief IP Counsel for BellSouth
Corporation and President & General Counsel for BellSouth IP Corporation.
Michael Bishop is Chief IP Counsel for BellSouth Corporation and President & General
Counsel for BellSouth IP Corporation. Michael leads the BellSouth IP legal
group’s work in support of the BellSouth IP program, including protection,
licensing and enforcement of BellSouth’s extensive IP asset portfolio.
Michael joined BellSouth in 1999 from private practice with King & Spalding,
in Atlanta. Michael received his JD in 1990 from The George Washington
University Law School and his undergraduate degree in history, with high honors,
from the University of Florida.
Speaker: Jodi L. Hartman – Partner, Hope
Baldauff Hartman, LLC
Jodi L. Hartman is a partner with Hope Baldauff Hartman, LLC. Jodi
practices general intellectual property law with experience in preparing and
prosecuting patent applications as well as validity and non-infringement opinions
and litigating patent and trademark infringement matters. Her prosecution
patent areas include the mechanical, electrical, and computer arts.
Jodi received her law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law,
cum laude, and her engineering degree from Clemson University, magna cum laude. Jodi
is licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
and in the state of Georgia.
