Topic:
Look Before You License: How to Evaluate a Technology Before You In-License, Out-License, Add to Your Portfolio, or Just Plain Spend any Time and Money

Whether you do one or one hundred licenses per year, we can all agree that licensing is a great way to obtain new technologies for your company, make profits from non-performing assets, and transfer technologies invented at universities to be developed for the public good. But building an intellectual asset can be expensive, and building a licensing relationship is time-consuming. Before you begin to protect and transfer a technology, you need to understand the technology and its commercial utility - and make certain it is worth your investment of time and money.

Our speakers will talk about opportunity assessment, the art and science of technology evaluation. They will share a system and an evaluation tool that enables them to "triage" hundreds of technologies per year. You may not be able to pick sure winners, but you can learn to avoid the losers.

Speakers:
We are fortunate to have two leaders in the technology transfer community as our presenters.

Kathleen A. Denis is Associate Vice President of Technology Transfer at the Rockefeller University and President-Elect, LES (USA and Canada); Louis P. Berneman is Managing Director of the Center for Technology Transfer (CTT) at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Trustee and Vice President of LES (USA and Canada). Between them, Kathleen and Lou have a wealth of experience in managing intellectual property portfolios, including the evaluation and marketing of new technologies. Prior to joining Rockefeller, Kathleen previously served as Vice President, Technology Development at Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation and as a Licensing Director of the CTT at Penn. Prior to joining Penn, Lou was Director, Licensing and Business Development at Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology. In addition to their roles with LES, Lou is a Past President and Kathleen is a former Board member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), and both play significant roles in related organizations.

In addition, Kathleen and Lou are the President and Chair, respectively, of the LES 2004 Annual Meeting to be held in Boston and will provide us with a preview of what to expect at the Annual Meeting.
