Program: Skill Sets for Success in IP Licensing
During the 90's the robust economy afforded many companies the luxury to invest in R&D efforts at a larger percent of revenues than previous decades. With the now infamous internet bubble burst, companies are scrutinizing R&D efforts with new vigor as dollars become more difficult to obtain. This includes not only controlling R&D spending but also leveraging the existing intellectual property portfolio for potential revenue. The traditional legal view of the patent portfolio is gradually moving to include a more business view of these assets. This view translates into a system of creating as well as managing wealth of the companies' intellectual property.
With this new shift in perspective comes new requirements for skills to address the growing need companies face to maximize their R&D efforts including leveraging the intellectual property portfolio. While some skills are naturally transferred from various professions some new skills need to be honed in order to achieve success in this growing field. This presentation is to address the skills that are needed to have success in IP licensing based on the experience of the presenters.
