Software product managers are responsible for almost all practices involved in producing products and bringing them to market, and can bring a unique perspective to all the various points where protecting some aspects of the company’s IP is needed. This impacts make/buy decisions, licensing-in component software and tools, IP segregation and management, and even defining the product structure. Such a wall-to-wall IP management regimen, well practiced, can allow the company to realize the benefits of Open Source tools and component software, in creative new models, without jeopardizing the house. Several options and tactics for software companies are discussed from the perspective of a product manager, and there will be opportunities for open discussion.

Don Jarrell’s Austin-based firm, Digital Thinking Inc., provides advisory and execution services to high tech firms in product management, licensing and IP management, drawing on over 20 years experience with Nortel, Alcatel and other major companies. He is past chair of LES’ Software Committee and is currently Secretary of LES’ High Technology Sector.
