"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
-William Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet," Act 2 scene 2
A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but would it sell? The selling power of names in today's economy has spawned an entire licensing industry, as well as a counterfeiting industry, based on the commercial power of trademarks. Our speaker, Leora Herrmann, will introduce us to the basics of trademarks and trademark licensing. She will discuss what a trademark is, how to choose and protect a trademark, generating revenues through trademark licensing, and what a trademark owner must watch out for in negotiating a trademark license. Leora will also share some of her experiences representing trademark owners in their efforts to combat trademark counterfeiting.
Leora is a member of the law firm Grimes & Battersby, with offices in New York City and Norwalk, Connecticut. Her practice is focused in the areas of licensing and trademark, copyright and Internet law. She is Secretary of the Intellectual Property Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and Co-Chair of the Internet Law Committee of The Regional Bar Association. She has spoken on issues of intellectual property and Internet law, and has taught Trial Practice as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Bridgeport School of Law. Leora received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1978 and her B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975.
