About the Speakers:

Richard Leach
Richard is the manager of Technology Transfer for The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). Richard has been with UTA for thirteen years. During that time, Richard has been Metroplex Director of the NASA Mid-Continent Technology Transfer Center, an effort to commercialize federal laboratory technology, and Metroplex Director of the Defense Technology Commercialization Program, an effort to commercialize defense related technology. In addition to technology transfer, Richard has worked as a research engineer at UTA providing access to advanced management practices and appropriate technologies. Richard has consulted for companies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area ranging from small, one-person operations, to large corporations such as Lockheed-Martin and Northrop-Grumman.

Richard received his B.A. in Social and Behavioral Science from The University of Texas at Austin. He received both his B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from UTA where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Industrial Engineering. In addition, Richard has completed quality seminars by Deming, Goldratt, and Juran.

Rafael Martín
Directing the Office of Technology Transfer at UTD, Rafael manages the interaction between UTD and organizations interested in working with the University and utilizing its resources. He promotes UTD technologies to potential licensees and is a member of the University's Intellectual Property Committee. He is responsible for negotiating licenses, non-disclosure agreements, and material transfer agreements and assists the Office of Sponsored Projects with intellectual property issues.

Rafael's work experience includes consulting with McKinsey & Company in Dallas and Toronto, where he worked in a wide variety of industries, including IT integration, retailing, specialty chemical production and banking. After consulting, Rafael shifted career paths and worked in public safety as a paramedic North Carolina, where he trained new employees and taught emergency medicine classes. In recent years Rafael has worked with The Home Depot in Atlanta helping that company to develop a more environmentally sustainable product mix. In addition, he has worked with Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan and Chennai, India helping that company assess the financial, social and environmental impacts of their Indian operations.

Rafael holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.S. in Policy and Economics from Duke University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ray Wheatley
Ray Wheatley is Director for Technology Transfer at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Ray joined UT Southwestern in 1984 and assumed technology transfer responsibilities in 1990. In addition to managing the significant growth of UT Southwestern's technology transfer efforts, he has licensed hundreds of biotech and medical related technologies to a variety of companies around the world and completed a number of start-up deals. He is a member of LES and AUTM and served as a liaison between these two groups for 3 years. He has a BS from the University of Illinois in biochemistry and an MS in Healthcare Administration from Texas Woman's University.
