Topic:
Patent Cooperation Treaty Update

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system is expanding rapidly; the number of international applications has grown from 2,600 in 1979 to about 104,000 in 2001. One of the most successful and widely used of the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) treaties, the PCT system has consolidated and streamlined patenting procedures and reduced costs for patents applicants worldwide.

  • But what does the future hold for the 115 member States using the PCT system?
  • What changes are down the line that can impact the way we do business here in the U.S.?

    Speaker:
The speaker, Jay Erstling, is the Director of the Office of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) of WIPO. Visiting from Geneva, Switzerland, he will share with us his view of PCT's success and tell us what we are likely to expect from this U.N. organization. Mr. Erstling oversees the processing and publication of PCT international applications, relations with PCT Contracting States and PCT users, as well as the promotion and development of the PCT and International Patent Classification (IPC) systems.
