TOPIC: "Global Innovation Collaboration and the Flow of Proprietary Knowledge – Are Your Company Jewels a Shared Resource?"
Innovation has become a basic ingredient for growth, and companies are frantically looking outside for innovation. As a result, collaborative innovation is surging, building innovation teams from multiple organizations located in numerous countries. These global collaborative innovation efforts offer the ability to tap into new ideas, leverage specialized technical talent, reduce development costs, share risk and accelerate time to market. But how does the management of intellectual assets in these global collaborations differ from domestic collaborations? Practices deemed adequate for domestic collaboration may prove inadequate in a global context due to differing cultural, managerial and legal expectations, thereby creating unintended knowledge migration problems, inventorship issues, and ownership claims that can compromise your company jewels – the proprietary knowledge, experience and strategy behind your competitive advantage.
In this presentation, Mark Mondry will discuss the challenges and the realities of collaborative knowledge flow in the rising open-innovation environment. Discussion will include relevant license drafting issues, innovation team management practices and recent trends in global intellectual property protection relating to the dynamics of global collaborative innovation efforts.
Mark B. Mondry is Managing Director of Phronesys LLC, a Colorado based management consulting firm focused on helping client organizations achieve growth through strategic innovation. His background includes over 25 years legal, transactional and executive management experience in high growth companies ranging from large established industry leaders (Eli Lilly, Guidant) to early stage technology start-ups.. Mr. Mondry earned his undergraduate degree in Engineering from Miami University, His Master’s in Business from Johns Hopkins and his law degree. from the University of Maryland. He is a registered Patent Attorney and a PDMA certified New Product Development Professional.
