The Maryland Chapter Presents

Col. George W. Korch, Jr., Ph.D.

Commander, U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID)

January 10, 2008

Col. Korch commands the lead medical research laboratory for the U.S. Biological Defense Research Program in Ft. Detrick, Maryland, which is actively engaged in collaborations with industry and academia to develop and commercialize medical technologies.  For many years, Col. Korch has engaged in research and program management for medical defense against biological pathogens used in terrorism and warfare, and was recently appointed by Governor O’Malley to the Maryland Life Sciences Advisory Board.  We are honored to have Col. Korch speak at our first Chapter meeting of the New Year, on the topic of

Biological Terrorism and Biological Warfare
USAMRIID's Role in Developing Medical Countermeasures

Meeting Location

The University of Maryland’s New Bioscience Research Building on the College Park Campus.

Bioscience Research Building

Hosted by the UM College of Chemical and Life Sciences

Special Pre-Meeting Feature!

Private Tour of the Bioscience Research Building

Dedicated just this past September, the new Bioscience Research Building has 68,000 square feet of laboratory space to meet the needs of 33 faculty-led research groups.  With two Biosafety Level-3 labs, a 475-seat lecture hall and conference rooms for teaching and professional meetings, each of the four levels of the building is dedicated to a different area of research:  plant molecular and cell biology on the ground floor; neuroscience on the first floor; genomics on the second floor; and host-pathogen interactions on the third floor.  Associate Dean Robert Infantino has graciously offered to be our guide for a private tour of the facility immediately prior to the start of the meeting.
