Meeting of the Maryland Local Chapter

March
22, 2006
at
The University of Maryland College Park
Golf Course

5:30 - 8:30 pm

We are honored to have Frederick Provorny share with us his interesting experiences advising on licensing issues with companies using the services of the Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center.

Topic:   "Tales from the Trenches:  Representing the Technology Entrepreneur after the Ink is Dry and the Last Toast is Drunk."

The Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center provides free comprehensive intellectual property, business and corporate legal services to start-up and other early stage technology companies throughout Maryland and select companies outside the state that wish to establish a presence here.  Our goal is to be a catalyst for entrepreneurship, economic development and job creation in Maryland's technology sector and to create a cadre of expertly educated lawyers who are conversant with and sensitive to the unique needs of these clients.

Tech transfer personnel meet with their licenses only periodically after the deal is done; we meet with some of our clients daily.  As a result, we have amassed a collection of "war stories":  some inspirational, many humorous, and others bizarre. Within the bounds of our ethical obligations to actual and prospective clients, Professor Provorny will share some of these stories with you.  For tech transfer and economic development professionals, and others committed to technology commercialization, this presentation will be an instructive and entertaining look at "life on the other side."

Speaker Introduction:

FREDERICK A. PROVORNY is a Visiting Law School Professor at the University of Maryland and the Director of the Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center. He brings to the Center almost thirty years of experience in intellectual property law, complex business transactions, venture capital and technology transfer. Professor Provorny previously was the Harold R. Tyler Professor of Law and Technology at Albany Law School and the founding Director of the New York State Science and Technology Law Center.  At that Center, he created a statewide legal assistance program for early stage technology companies and an extensive series of educational programs for entrepreneurs, faculty and others interested in legal and funding topics affecting technology businesses.  Professor Provorny also created a venture capital forum featuring emerging technology companies that in three years became one of the premier events of its kind in the east.  In addition to his academic career, Professor Provorny has practiced at major firms in New York City and Washington, D.C., and at Monsanto Company in St. Louis. He graduated summa cum laude from New York University and magna cum laude from Columbia Law School, where he was an Editor of the Columbia Law Review.  He is also an elected member of the American Law Institute.
