Meeting of the
of the
Maryland Local LES Chapter

March 22, 2007

at

The Cloister on the NIH Campus
Bethesda, MD 20814
6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

We are especially pleased to host Steven M. Ferguson as our speaker this month for the meeting of the Maryland Local LES Chapter at the Cloisters on the NIH campus. Steven is the Director of the Division of Technology Development & Transfer – the patent & licensing group for the NIH and FDA within the NIH Office of Technology Transfer.  For many of us it may be the first time on the campus so please allow plenty of time for security check-in and parking.  We are certain that it will be worth your while as we provide a very interesting venue and a speaker with much experience and insight.

Topic: "Products, Partnerships & Public Health – Licensing At the National Institutes of Health (NIH)"

Speaker Introduction: Steve M. Ferguson
Director, Division of Technology Development & Transfer
Office of Technology Transfer
National Institutes of Health

Compared to contracts with universities or corporations, the NIH often brings a different focus and attitude to the table when negotiating its technology licensing agreements.  Because these agreements are used to further an overall agency healthcare mission rather than individual shareholder or faculty goals, NIH licensing executives must consider the public health consequences of such agreements as their first priority, rather than market strategies or specific financial terms.  The resulting transactions reflect a unique mix of leading-edge biomedical research, government requirements, commercial terms and public policy goals that make the licensing program at the NIH one of the largest and most successful in the country.
