It is with utmost pleasure that the LES Maryland Chapter has the opportunity to welcome Mark J. Chandler to share with us his insights in licensing issues related to the start-up environment.
Topic:
Licensing and Leverage for Start-ups - Care and feeding at birth, thriving through adolescence, and providing comfort at an untimely demise
For new ventures, clever licensing and leveraging of intellectual property assets can fundamentally improve the company’s return on investment. When forming new ventures around core IP assets, proper structuring of the deal helps set the tone for the incentives and culture of the company.
Sage and savvy IP strategy, coupled with creative licensing approaches, can enhance these assets and produce alternative ways to finance a business.
When a venture hits the wall, and fails in the market, the underlying assets can help founders and investors recover financial returns they may not have expected. Using examples from today’s headlines – NTP and Interdigital – and back page stories that seldom surface –Infonautics and AstraZeneca – we will explore the challenges and possibilities facing venture-backed companies and their investors.
Speaker Introduction:
Mark Chandler is a Managing Director at Invotex Group (formerly IPM&F). Mark has more than 20 years experience in the development, management and commercialization of advanced technology, the past 10 of which have been specializing in intellectual property assets. As an early stage venture capitalist, he was involved in the creation or funding of more than 15 new venture-backed companies in North America and Europe, all based around IP assets. He has led teams in the development of patent litigation cases and the licensing and sale of intellectual property assets. Mark has also led consulting operations with engagements in intellectual property valuation, commercial assessment of new technology, licensing and commercialization, and the strategic development of intellectual property. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Bucknell University and a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
