The LES Minnesota Chapter Leadership Team is delighted to invite you to a special event with Henry Chesbrough, author of "Open Innovations", on Thursday, May 18. We strongly encourage you to attend, and suggest that you invite others in your organization who might benefit from this event so we all get the maximum benefit out of this opportunity.

Many of you have read "Open Innovations", in which Prof. Chesbrough articulates a new paradigm for organizing and managing R&D. In this new approach, companies must access external as well as internal technologies, and take them to market through internal and external paths. This book was named a "Best Business Book of 2003" by Strategy & Business magazine, and the best book on innovation in 2003 on NPR's All Things Considered. Scientific American magazine named Prof. Chesbrough one of the top 50 technology and business leaders for 2003 in recognition of his research on industrial innovation.

Prof. Chesbrough is a highly sought speaker and discussion participant. We are very fortunate to have been able to arrange for him to both speak and engage in an active dialog with us. He has learned much about the field since writing the book, and people who have heard him speak or been able to participate in discussions with him know that this is a great opportunity to work with him in a group that is small enough to have a real discussion.

To take full advantage of this opportunity, this session will run from 11 AM to 1 PM. During the first hour, Prof. Chesbrough will speak on:

Open Innovation: Why Innovators Need to be Involved in Managing IP (and not just the lawyers)

Abstract: Open Innovation argues that companies should make much greater use of external ideas in their own business, and let others make greater use of the companies' ideas in others' businesses. Whether bringing ideas and technology in, or taking them out, IP becomes a critical part of the innovation process. Put differently, a company must change its IP management process as well, if it wishes to change its innovation process. A group of "innovation intermediaries" can play an important role.

The second hour will be a discussion with Prof. Chesbrough. Our hope is to have a very open conversation on a range of subjects, rather than just simple Q&A. We encourage you to send questions or possible discussion topics in advance, to tammy.duffney@medtronic.com
