The Montreal Chapter is an important way to keep in touch with fellow licensing executives and also an opportunity to meet and introduce new members.  We would like to begin holding meetings more regularly starting this October and we look forward to your participation for the success of such events.

The activities for the next few months have already been scheduled so please mark your agendas:

October 8th “Microsoft and the Open Innovation Model”
Speaker: Me Louis Carbonneau, Senior Corporate Attorney, Microsoft Corporation
Location: Robic, 1001 Victoria-Square – Bloc E – 8th floor in Montreal

November 5th “La P.I. dans un consortium de recherche, après le CRIAQ le CQDM”  Speaker : Max Fehlmann, Director of Consortium québécois sur la découverte du médicament (CQDM)..

December 4th  “Official organizational and kick-off meeting”

January 7th “Your contribution to the Spring meeting in Montreal”

In addition to holding meetings more regularly, we want to ensure that we cover a wide range of topics that are of interest to LES members, whether related to the industry, university or legal sectors and we welcome your suggestions and input in order to achieve our goal.  Here is a list of suggested topics for which we would like your input in our December meeting:

• Patent trolls: who feeds them with patents?
• What are the rights of a company to continue using a trade secret if another company applies for a patent? Canadian, American and European realities.
• Build your own low cost patent mapping system
• International licensing, taxes and rules related to exportation
• Start-up companies and venture capitalists. Can you hold on to your IP rights. Panel discussion
• Tax credit of IP costs, myths and realities
• CLP credentials, how useful in a small market?

Other subjects are most welcome.

Notre objectif est de tenir des réunions d’intérêt pour la totalité des membres du LES et ce dans tous les secteurs, autant de l’industrie, universitaire que légal nous avons besoin de vos suggestions afin d’atteindre cet objectif.  Voici une liste de sujets suggérés pour lesquels nous aimerions avoir vos commentaires lors de la réunion du mois de décembre 2008:

• « Patent trolls » : Comment se procurent-ils  les brevets ?
• Une entreprise peut-elle continuer à utiliser ses secrets commerciaux si une autre entreprise dépose une demande de brevet les revendiquant? Réalité canadienne, américaine et européenne.
• Construisez votre propre système de « patent mapping » à peu de frais
• Le Licensing au niveau international,  taxes et règlementations liées à l’exportation
• Spin-off universitaire; qu’exigent les fonds de capital de risque en terme de droits de propriété intellectuelle? Table ronde (ou discussion en panel)
• Crédit d’impôt et coûts en PI; mythes et réalités
• Les qualifications CLP, est-ce utile dans un petit marché ?
