Oct. 4 - Basking Ridge Country Club
Merck’s
Got A New Attitude!
Guest Speaker
MERVYN J. TURNER, PhD
Senior Vice President,
Worldwide Licensing & External
Research
Merck Research Laboratories
Merck & Co., Inc.
Many of the world’s most effective drugs and vaccines have come from
the laboratories of this icon of American industry, Merck & Co., Inc. For
many years, Merck was successful at licensing, but relied on its reputation
to generate opportunity. But as the licensing market has heated up, and
faced with patent expiries and development failures, Merck has had to reinvent
its licensing process to overcome perceptions of arrogance and NIH syndrome.
The company is now going outside for new drugs in an aggressive manner, which
is seen as essential for growth and continued success as a leader in the industry.
To reverse the negative image and to encourage the scientists to treat smaller
biotechs with more courtesy and respect, Dr. Mervyn Turner says, "We sent our
guys to charm school." Apparently the efforts are working. In recent
years, Merck has been signing 40-50 significant deals per year, a phenomenal
number compared to only 10 in 1999.
Join us for this exceptional meeting as one of the leaders in the pharma licensing
profession talks about his company’s licensing experiences and how they
have become one of the best partners of choice in the industry.
________________________________________________________________________________________
Dr. Mervyn Turner joined Merck Research Laboratories in 1985. Over
the last 20 years, he has held many positions of increasing responsibility
at Merck. In August 1999, Dr. Turner was appointed Senior Vice President,
Merck Frosst Centre for Therapeutic Research in Montreal, Canada. Dr.
Turner returned from his assignment in Montreal in October 2002 to take up
his current position as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Licensing and External
Research. In this role, he is responsible for the oversight of all of
Merck’s licensing activities, and for the management of academic relations. Through
his multiple and diverse experiences in the Merck Research Laboratories, Dr.
Turner has acquired a broad perspective on the issues surrounding drug discovery
and development.
2004 through 2006 saw a sizeable increase in deal activity for Merck, with
over 140 transactions completed. Merck has also been active in M & A,
with Aton, Abmaxis, and GlycoFi all acquired to build areas of key strategic
importance. Dr. Turner sees all this activity as a logical product
of a cultural shift within Merck towards a more outward-facing organization.
Dr. Turner is the author of over 80 articles in peer reviewed journals. He
has served on the Editorial Board of a number of journals, and since 1998 has
been a member of Health Care Ventures Scientific Advisory Board. He is
a member of LES.
