Feeding The Pipeline III:
Re-Defining Opportunity Value in Late-Stage Licensing
At the recent annual meeting of the Licensing Executives Society in Chicago, Ed Saltzman presented the third workshop in the series called Feeding The Pipeline. There was an overwhelming response to this presentation and people had to be turned away because the room was too small. For those of you who missed it and for those of you who would like to hear it again, we're holding this bonus meeting prior to our December holiday event, and we hope you'll be able to attend.
PRESENTATION: The number of legitimate late-stage product opportunities available for licensing with revenue potential attractive to big pharma is startlingly small. As a result, blockbuster patent expirations and barren internal late-stage pipelines continue to provoke a feeding frenzy for any opportunity that clears the bar, often regardless of strategic fit. The result is a "theatre of the absurd" production in which hundreds of pharma licensing buyers find themselves forced to play starring roles, squeezed on stage between a handful of increasingly demanding biotech sellers and their own senior management which continues to ratchet up the pressure to land "The Big One." Begun in 2000 at the LES Annual Meeting at Toronto, the Feeding the Pipeline workshops have had two consistent objectives: 1) produce an estimate of the available late-stage compound inventory and 2) consider alternatives to the often futile search for same. Beyond documenting the problem, the presentation and discussion will consider strategic alternatives to the maddening stampede within the context of today's transformational industry trends in the big pharma, specialty pharma and biotech sectors.
SPEAKER:
Edward C. Saltzman, President, Defined Health. Ed has devoted the majority of his 20+ years in the healthcare industry to the identification, evaluation and strategic development of healthcare business opportunities. At Defined Health, he has directed thousands of opportunity assessments covering hundreds of established markets and development programs in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, diagnostics and healthcare services. For the past several years he has leveraged this experience in advising the management of development stage, niche and fully-integrated global pharmaceutical companies on business development and corporate partnering issues. Before his involvement with Defined Health, he was employed by the Ayerst Laboratories unit of American Home Products, with responsibilities for evaluation and forecasting of compounds being considered for licensing. Prior to Ayerst, he managed the Healthcare Information Center at FIND/SVP. He is a member of the Licensing Executives Society and the New York Pharma Forum and is a graduate of New York University.
