Global Vaccines, Inc. (GVI) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) company with a mission to translate potentially transformational scientific discoveries into affordable vaccines for resource poor nations. GVI advances technologies developed in academic and government vaccine research centers through the company’s scientific and technical know-how and entrepreneurial business expertise.
The Global Vaccines Patent Trust (GVPT) expands the tool kit available to GVI to become self-sustaining and self-sufficient in attaining its mission. The GVPT has as a founding principle that patents and patent applications under its control would always be available to the developing world. The GVPT in combination with GVI’s growing product development capability is a dedicated vehicle for moving technologies out of innovator organizations where these technologies might languish otherwise. Access to new sources of funding for GVI, especially from larger commercial vaccine manufacturers, is opened up through the GVPT. The GVPT also helps position GVI well with philanthropic donors.
The GVPT concept enhances GVI’s reputation as an innovator, and serves as a model for technology development for social entrepreneurial endeavors in other fields. As such, it attracts the consultancy interest of university technology transfer professionals and social entrepreneurs to GVI.
