MODERATOR:
D. ELLIOT PARKS, PH.D. MANAGING DIRECTOR HAMILTON BIOVENTURES

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
As the regenerative medicine field is growing, it is making its mark worldwide.  The huge embryonic stem cell bank created by Medical Research Council (MRC) in Britain, licensing agreements between companies within the U.S. and those outside, and loans by philanthropic organizations to California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) exemplify that this sector is blooming.  Locally, President George W. Bush's veto of legislation to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research has resulted in state money flowing into this area.  Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to loan CIRM (created by proposition 71) $150 million in state money to jump start the program.

The pace of stem cell research and applications no doubt, is being determined by ethical, scientific, business and political considerations.  And interestingly enough, these factors continue to influence one another. Will the expansion of this exciting, yet at times elusive terrain be limited by IP factors, or will it be enhanced by them?  How will the IP developed from CIRM funding be commercialized and how will the rewards, if any, be shared with the California taxpayer?  What are the entities vying for a big piece of the CIRM $$$$ pie?  Could some of the claims that are being made by stem cell companies regarding treatments be extravagant, i.e., is the stem cell area a 20+ year work-in-progress with no significant therapeutic results for patients?
