LES
San Diego hopes that all of its members are in good health. Our
thoughts are with those residents of San Diego County, especially any
of our members, who lost property during the recent fires.
This meeting was originally scheduled for the month of October but was
cancelled due to the fires. If you had already signed up for the
October meeting, your are registered for this meeting and need not register
again. If you had registered for the October meeting, but cannot
attend the November meeting, please contact Sam Tahmassebi (contact information
below) for a refund. We, of course, look forward to seeing all of
you on November 15th.

PANELISTS’ BIOGRAPHY
Keith Posehn is an entrepreneur and consultant with several
years experience developing video games, monetizing business models, and creating
new startup companies. Starting his experience in the video game industry with
the Strike™ series by Electronic Arts, he moved into consulting at the
turn of the century. He serves as Chief Scientific Officer of Bang Out Games
whose business model includes selling “casual” games designed by
independent writers through affiliate networks.
Nicholas A. Boyle, Ph.D. is a co-founder and the CEO and
President AlisTech. He initiated a study of appropriate drug technologies that
culminated in the licensing of intellectual property for the supportive care
of animals and humans undergoing cancer therapy. Dr. Boyle’s experience is in pharma
as a medicinal chemist with SmithKline Beecham, in biotechnology at Biota Inc.
and in academia in fields including oncology, HIV, stroke, and neurodegeneration.
He is an author on 16 publications, 4 patents (issued or pending) and has delivered
presentations at major international conferences. Dr. Boyle completed post-doctoral
research at The Scripps Research Institute and earned his Ph.D. in organic
chemistry at Sheffield University.
Mark Benedyk, Ph.D. is the Vice President, Business
Development, Ascenta Therapeutics, Inc. Prior to joining Ascenta in May
2005, Dr. Benedyk was Vice President of Business Development and Director of
Optimer Biotechnology, an international biotechnology firm with operations
in the U.S., Singapore and Taiwan. Previously, Dr. Benedyk has held business
development positions at rila bioconsulting, Farmal Biomedicines, Aurora Biosciences
(now Vertex Pharmaceuticals), Élan Pharmaceuticals, and Argonex Corporation.
During his tenure in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, Dr. Benedyk
personally led transactions worth over $250 million and participated in over
$500 million worth of product licensing and corporate acquisition transactions
overall. Dr. Benedyk received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Developmental Biology
from The Rockefeller University, where he was a Lucille P. Markey Graduate
Fellow. His B.S. in Microbiology and Botany was received from the University
of Michigan.
Robert P. Cogan, the moderator for the discussion, is a Partner
in the San Diego office of The Nath Law Group, an intellectual property law
firm based in the Washington, DC area. Mr. Cogan is a patent attorney with
an electrical engineering background. He provides legal advice on intellectual
property matters to a wide spectrum of clients including companies in the high
technology, medical device, light and heavy industrial, commercial and financial
sectors as well as universities and individual entrepreneurs. Before moving
into private practice, Mr. Cogan practiced law for more than twenty years as
an in-house patent attorney for several large corporations. As chief patent
counsel for EG&G, a Fortune 200 company, he drafted and supervised the
drafting and prosecution of patent applications across a wide variety of technology
disciplines, advised operational personnel on intellectual property aspects
in many different business situations and played a managerial role within the
Corporation. This broad range of experience provides Mr. Cogan with strong
expertise in advising and counseling companies operating in today's fast-paced
environment.
