PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
In 1971 President Nixon signed the National Cancer Act declaring the "War on
Cancer" and setting the stage for America's "Healthcare Vietnam", a war of
attrition that still regularly claims more victims from among friends & family.
And like Defense Dept. cost overruns, deal terms in the oncology space have
consistently set the bar for new highs in the biotech & pharmaceutical
industries.
GlaxoSmithKline's agreement in December with Genmab A/S of Denmark to license
a new treatment for leukemia (HuMax-CD20) set another world record, consisting
of $2.1 Billion in total payments and potential milestones. Genmab received
an upfront license fee of $102 million, coincident with GSK investing $357
million to buy 10.1 % of Genmab's outstanding stock. Downstream milestones
could total $ 1.6 Billion should the Phase III drug reach the marketplace.
Moreover, the oncology field is often the source of innovative deal terms
and licensing agreements, starting way back in 1995 when San Diego's own early-stage
company, IDEC, negotiated a revenue-sharing and co-marketing agreement for
the drug Rituxan with the much-larger Genentech.
The deal terms also have a bearing on clinical trials for drugs, and sponsorships
decisions, as the costs associated with the trials can be enormous.
No matter what your area of focus in the healthcare industry, deal trends
and business models in oncology may instruct and inform your own licensing,
business development, I.P., and clinical trials strategies. Please join us
for a deal-trend update and panel discussion on the largest and most seminal
field of biotechnology and healthcare.
To learn more, please join us on Thursday, February
15 at the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Meeting at La Jolla Marriott.
