PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Due to long research and development cycles and competitive time-to-market forces, it is faster and cheaper to buy biotech assets rather than to build or license them. San Diego is rife with recent examples of mergers and acquisitions in the biotech space including the Cephalon acquisition of Salmedix, the Pfizer/IDUN Pharmaceuticals deal, the Xcel Pharmaceuticals/Valeant (formerly ICN) transaction and many others. Often, business development professionals looking to do a licensing deal on both the buy and sell sides wind up originating an M&A transaction. If the deal terms are too high, why not buy the whole company! Scary? This impressive panel, consisting of business development professionals involved in some of the recent M&A transactions as well as a savvy biotech investment banker to moderate, will instruct you on how to walk -- and profit from -- the fine line between strategic alliances and M&A.
