PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Warren Buffet's $31 billion-dollar charitable bequest of Berkshire Hathaway stock to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in June dramatically underscored for the world the importance and growing magnitude of non-governmental, non-profit organizations in global healthcare R&D and humanitarian aid.  California and San Diego are likewise well-endowed with many well-funded non-profits either directly engaged in healthcare-related R&D such as Scripps, the Salk Institute and the Burnham Institute, or merely acting as funding sources, such as The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and The Preuss Foundation.

Intellectual property (I.P.) rights in the non-profit context run the gamut from being the sole property of individual inventors, to Bayh-Dole regimes a la NIH- and CIRM-derived funding, to Woodstock-like communal "un-I.P." in the case of the Gates Foundation's $287 million program for HIV/AIDS vaccine research announced in July.  So should the typical non-profit organization attempt to "profit" from the I.P. its funding or activities create?  And if yes, how should this be done while maintaining a non-profit status?

This animated panel of industry glitterati will discuss the strategic, legal, licensing and ethical issues straddling the demarcation line between the non-profit and for-profit worlds.  After a long summer idyll, get recharged and reconnected with your LES colleagues at this kick-off meeting of our Fall programming schedule.
