The "Art of Persuasion" is a skill that improves with knowledge and practice. On March 18th, you'll have an opportunity to gain both! At the next LES meeting we will learn tips and techniques for negotiations which may just make the difference in inking your next deal.

Our esteemed guest speaker on this night will be Tom Vazakas of ComSol, who will share from his wealth of experience from negotiating business transactions and turning disputes into deals. The issues to be discussed include:

  • How do I approach a negotiation: cooperation or competition?
  • How do I get what I want?
  • What's relationship-building got to do with it?
  • Why do I have to take care of the other person first?
  • Things aren't working-what do I do now?
Before coming to San Diego in 1987, Mr. Vazakas participated as counsel in establishing the Biomedical Research Centre on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver, B.C. He worked with a number of biotech ventures focusing on AIDS and interferons. After coming to San Diego, Mr. Vazakas' practice included the disputes side of business law. True to his transactional attorney roots, Mr. Vazakas sought to turn disputes into rational deals. Always looking for better ways to handle "tough" negotiations, Mr. Vazakas condensed a set of principles and techniques that integrate the cooperative and the competitive aspects of negotiations, which he now presents in professional seminars.

Until 2001, Mr. Vazakas was partner and of counsel with the law firm of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP.

So come out on March 18th for some networking and a chance to reinforce your negotiation skills after giving them a fresh look.

Other Business:

At the February 18, 2002 meeting, a special election was held to fill the 2003-2004 Chair-Elect position. The Chapter is proud to announce that Dr. Norm Brown, Vice President, I P Commercialization for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) has been elected to the post. At SAIC, Dr. Brown directs the identification and commercialization of intellectual property for the company, through licensing, partnering, new-company formation and donation of IP to non-profit organizations. Prior to joining SAIC, Norm managed the technology licensing operations at the University of California, at the University of Utah, and for a number of US Federal Laboratories. He also served as an intellectual property attorney, serving technology-based clients and start-ups in the state of Washington. Before that, Brown managed Marketing, Product Development, and Strategic Planning departments in the medical products and high-technology fields, at companies like Miles Laboratories, Bethlehem Steel and General Mills. Brown has a Doctorate in Business from George Washington University and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He served as Chair of the San Diego LES Chapter from 1999 to 2001 and it is with great pleasure that we welcome Norm back to participating in the leadership of the Chapter.
