Topic: The presentation topic will cover asset valuation including
valuation of IP assets.
Synopsis: The presenters provided a basic primer on what can be a
complex subject: asset valuation including evaluation of IP assets,
and provide case studies in both the software and biotechnology
industries. They addressed a variety of aspects of valuation,
including the rationale for, and pros and cons of, allocating value to
goodwill versus other amortizable assets, and the resulting impact on
the acquiring entities' financial statements.
Speaker Bios:
Michael Willoughby has performed business valuation and
litigation-related economic analysis to clients in wide range of
industries for more than 14 years. His primary casework involves the
appraisal of intellectual property assets for proposed transactions.
Michael attended Columbia Business School and earned his Masters
degree and Doctorate in finance from Columbia University. He is a
Chartered Financial Analyst and former President of the Financial
Analysts' Society of San Diego. He holds two adjunct faculty
appointments at UCSD - Department of Economics (since 1994) and School
of Medicine (since 2000). He has published work on valuation,
accounting, and economic issues.
Stephen Bick focuses his practice on business valuation and financial
consulting. He has negotiated deal price and terms for privately-held
companies that have been acquired by public companies. In addition,
Mr. Bick has consulted in some of the largest trade secret
infringement cases filed in the United States. Stephen is a graduate
of the University of Cape Town and majored in Economics and Business
Finance. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and has completed
all requirements for the ASA designation by the American Society of Appraisers.
