Program:
In the past quarter century, biotechnology has grown from an academic research specialty to a powerhouse industry, fueled in part by companies' ability to derive revenue from DNA patents. Investment in biotech research has certainly paid off: our ability to understand and manipulate the human genetic code has allowed scientists to develop an astonishing number of new diagnostic tests and medical treatments. Unfortunately, those very patents that were intended to protect investment in biotech innovation have inadvertently created a complex IP thicket - especially in genetic testing - that is perceived by many to hinder further research, diagnosis, and treatment. Patients will benefit fully from the biotech revolution in genetic diagnostics when the industry is ready to adopt more streamlined licensing models, such as "patent pooling."
Seattle-area biotech firms will have the opportunity to learn about patent pooling during an upcoming program sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the Licensing Executive Society (LES). Guest speaker, Jorge A. Goldstein, Ph.D., J.D., will present a talk on "Promoting Biotech Innovation through Patent Pooling." Goldstein has been a director at Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein and Fox, P.L.L.C., an intellectual property law firm, for more than twenty years. He is counsel to some of the most prominent biotechnology companies of our time, and has authored dozens of papers on patent law related to biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, and organic chemistry. He has taught and lectured at the Weizman Institute, Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University.
The evening will begin with networking at 6:00 pm, followed at 7:00 pm by dinner and the speaker presentation.
