Dispute Resolution - Arbitrate, Mediate or Litigate?

Speaker:
Mel Simburg
Simburg, Ketter, Sheppard and Purdy LLP

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008
11:30 am - 1:00 pm
(presentation 12:00 - 1:00)

*Please note the location for this meeting*
American Arbitration Association
701 Pike St, Suite 950
Seattle, WA 98101
Tel. 206.622.6435

Mel Simburg is an attorney with experience in international distribution, copyright and trademark protection, technology licensing and foreign investment.  He frequently serves as an arbitrator or mediator in large and complex disputes, particularly those focused on intellectual property matters.  He also assists parties entering license agreements or other contracts to identify and resolve issues in the drafting process in order to avoid future conflicts.

Mel will discuss the differences between mediation and arbitration, and how to choose between arbitration and litigation to resolve particular IP disputes. He will also discuss company policies on use of alternative dispute resolution and factors in selecting appropriate arbitrators/mediators. If there is enough time he will also review a model IP dispute resolution clause and the considerations in drafting clauses for international licenses.

The American Arbitration Association will provide attendees with brochures on alternative dispute resolution as well as a checklist for drafting dispute procedures in license agreements and other contracts.

**Please extend a special invitation to your licensing colleagues to attend this meeting.  The educational component and the networking will be very worthwhile to attendees of all experience levels.**

Many thanks to the American Arbitration Association for hosting this event and to Woodcock Washburn for sponsoring the lunch.

One CLE Credit is pending approval for this program, sponsored by the Washington Law School Foundation, University of Washington School of Law.
