The Boeing Company is a Fortune 50 company with about $58 Billion in annual sales.  The business is roughly 50% commercial and 50% “government.”  Boeing is the world leader in commercial transport aircraft and military derivatives of commercial aircraft.

The U.S. Government is steeped in their traditional way of doing business, while law/federal regulations have provided additional and different direction.  How are the various views and desires reconciled?

Jan Weiser is the Senior Manager, for Intellectual Property Protection & Awareness (IPP&A), reporting to Rob Gullette, Vice President, Intellectual Property Management (IPM) organization.  The organization reports to a corporate vice president at Boeing headquarters.   IPM and IPP&A have people at the major Boeing locations around the US.  IPP&A was chartered two years ago to provide Boeing with “tools” to drive IP awareness and protection throughout the culture.  Jan has twenty six years with Boeing/McDonnell Douglas.  Jan started her career in IP in 1987, and managed the licensing organization at the commercial group of McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing from 1992 to 2001.  She then turned to developing Boeing’s approach to government data rights for military derivatives of commercial airplanes at a critical time for Boeing.
