Program:

So-called “patent trolls,” i.e., people and companies who own patents and seek royalties from others without making a product of their own, are under attack. They are blamed for everything from clogging the courts, to increasing consumer costs, to stifling innovation. Are these attacks justified? Let’s hear now from the other side of the issue and why everyone benefits from a strong, predictable patent system.

• Why a strong patent system is important to everyone, individuals and companies alike.
• Why the myth of the “patent troll” is counterproductive.
• “Win-Win” is the name of the game.
• Insights into the minds and motivations of contingent-fee IP lawyers and their clients.

Philip P. Mann is the founder and principal member of the Seattle-based Mann Law Group, a firm dedicated to providing contingent-fee and other practical alternatives to high-cost hourly billing in patent and other Intellectual Property disputes.

A trial lawyer with over twenty years experience in all aspects of patent and IP practice, Mann was most recently a member of Christensen O’Connor Johnson Kindness in Seattle before forming the Mann Law Group in July, 2004. He received his Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1977, his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1983 and is admitted to practice in both Washington and Illinois as well as before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and numerous courts throughout the country.
