The GNU General Public License (GPL) is often called the free software movement’s constitution. For the first time in 25 years, the Free Software Foundation revised the GPL. How did the GPL change? It’s new but is it improved? Should you use it? What impact will the revised GPL have on free and open source software?
Professor Gomulkiewicz directs the UW Law School’s graduate program in Intellectual Property Law and Policy. Prior to joining the faculty, he was an Associate General Counsel at Microsoft where he led the group of lawyers providing legal counsel for development of Microsoft's major systems software, desktop applications, and developer tools software (including Windows and Office). He also served as chair of the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA) working group of the Business Software Alliance. He joined Microsoft from the law firm of Preston, Gates & Ellis. Professor Gomulkiewicz is co-author of the treatise Intellectual Property, Software, and Information Licensing: Law & Practice (BNA Books 2006), and has published articles on open source software, mass market licensing, UCITA, and legal protection for software. He is also the author of the Simple Public License (SimPL) which is an Open Source Initiative-approved plain language rendering of GPL 2.0.
**Please extend a special invitation to your licensing colleagues to attend this meeting. The educational component and the networking will be very worthwhile to attendees of all experience levels.**
