Program Overview – Licensing Across Borders
Licensing across borders has numerous pitfalls. Maggy Bailly, will introduce the subject and Ana Martins will illustrate some of the issues by using the case of licensing US GMOs to Brazil.

Ana Martins and Maggy Bailly have much in common: a JD in a civil law jurisdiction, a Harvard LLM, emigration to the United States from their respective countries, Brazil and Belgium, and teaching assignments at the UW School of Law.

Speaker Bio – Ana Martins – University of Washington School of Law
Ana Martins teaches International Environment Law at the UW School of Law and is about to receive her doctorate degree (PhD) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro where she was an assistant professor in Public International Law.  She also taught at The Institute for International Relations and Environmental law at the Center for Environment and co-coordinated the development of new environmental legislative proposals for the State of Rio de Janeiro relating to wetlands, licensing and coastal management and co-created and co-coordinated the first post-graduate program on environmental law in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Speaker Bio – Maggy Bailly – Bailly Law Firm / University of Washington School of Law
Maggy Bailly is an attorney and has taught Strategic Technology Licensing at the UW School of Law for the past 6 years.  She also teaches the art of the “Deal” at the LES course on Fundamentals of Intellectual Assets Management in San Francisco.  She is Chair of the International Practice Section of the Washington State Bar Association, as well as Chair of the LES Seattle Chapter. Before starting her own firm www.baillylawfirm.com , practicing business law with emphasis on technology transfer, Maggy Bailly was manager of international contracts and intellectual property licensing at The Boeing Company for 13 years.

Driving Directions to the Columbia Tower Club
From I-5 South

  • Take I-5 South to James Street Exit
  • Turn right onto Columbia Street (one way – west)
  • Cross Fifth Avenue
  • Entrance to the Columbia Center Garage is on the left, mid-block.

From I-5 North

  • Take I-5 North to Madison Street exit or take the Seneca Street exit
  • Turn left and continue to Fifth Avenue
  • Turn left onto Fifth Avenue and continue south to Columbia Street
  • Turn right onto Columbia Street
  • The entrance to the Columbia Center Parking Garage is on the left, mid-block.

The main entrance to the Columbia Center is located at Fifth Avenue and Columbia. If you have parked in the Columbia Center Garage, take garage elevators to the Fifth Avenue Lobby. In the lobby you will be greeted in the evenings or on weekends by a
Columbia Tower Club Receptionist or a member of the Columbia Center Security Staff.
You will ascend the main elevator to the 40th Floor (Sky Lobby), and then change elevators and continue to the 75th Floor. The Columbia Tower Club reception desk and coat check area is located on the 75th Floor. Club Receptionists will direct you to your
event location.
