The growth in the economic importance of intellectual property has been accompanied by an increase in the need for credible and supportable IP valuations.  This presentation will address some frequently-encountered purposes for IP valuation, and explain key valuation terms and concepts.  A hypothetical case example will be used to illustrate a variety of valuation approaches and methods.  The potential use of independent appraisers will also be discussed in the context of various IP valuation scenarios.

David Dufendach, CPA/ABV, ASA, is the National Director of Fair Value Reporting for Grant Thornton’s Valuation Services Group.  He values businesses, intellectual properties, intangible assets, closely-held stock, options and other assets and liabilities for a variety of purposes, including financial reporting, gift and estate tax, litigation, and strategic planning.  He is an adjunct faculty member in Seattle University’s graduate business school and is a guest lecturer at the University of Washington’s law and graduate business schools.  He has published various articles in Business Valuation Review and Valuation Strategies, and has made numerous valuation-related presentations at local, regional and national conferences.
