Title:
"Falling Off The Charts: Evolving Licensing Issues In the Music Business"
Speaker:
Jason Ropell, Partner,Gelfand & Co.; President, Cerberus Artist Management; President, Curve Music (Universal Music Canada)
An overview of the challenges facing the music industry including the
downturn, its causes, and the responses of the key players.
Technology has had a major impact on the music industry and the relationship between the major labels, artists and the general public. The evolution of the internet, superior recording technology and downloading, has made it easier for artists to record, produce and distribute their own works. On the other hand, it has also made it more difficult to monitor and enforce their proprietary rights, resulting in a significant loss of revenue to both the labels and the artists.
Jason Ropell is a partner in the firm of Gelfand & Co. an entertainment boutique in Toronto. Jason represents many performers, musicians, songwriters and producers. Jason is also an artist manager and the co- founder of an independent record company giving him particular insight into the workings of the music industry. Drawing on examples from his own practice and business experiences, Jason will discuss how relationships have evolved over recent years and provide us with useful practice points when structuring deals in this industry.
Cost:
