Title:
"Communications Research Centre Canada's (CRC) United States Patent Interference Case Win Against Corning and Furukawa: David Versus Goliath"
Speaker:
Jeet Hothi, Technology Transfer Manager, Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC)
In August 2002, the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC), the federal government centre of excellence for communications R&D was successful in a United States patent interference case with the two big multinationals, Corning and Furukawa. Jeet Hothi prepared and spearheaded this landmark case for the CRC.
The case involved a CRC patent that was cross-licensed to United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and was directed to a phase mask used to fabricate fibre Bragg gratings. The invention is recognized as one of the four major discoveries in optical communications, following the invention of optical fibres, lasers and optical amplifiers.
This is a success story about Canadian technology protection, and a landmark decision that will help protect Canada's innovation capacity, now and in the future.
