The Vancouver chapter of the LICENSING
EXECUTIVES SOCIETY invites all LES members and friends to a presentation
by Dr. Kate Murashige of Morrison & Foerster LLP on a wide range
of issues affecting intellectual property to watch in the coming year.

IP Issues to Watch in 2007
Dr. Murashige will discuss a wide
range of issues affecting intellectual property, including developing
patent strategies around research collaborations, how the CREATE
Act is working out, the implications of the upcoming Supreme
Court decision on obviousness (“motivation to combine”),
the landmark Merck case and the research tools scope under the
clinical trials exemption, upcoming Supreme Court decisions in
Medimmune and in KSR, changes in continuation practice, consideration
by the Supreme Court of granting certiorari in other patent matters,
comparative patentability requirements in Asia versus the West,
and so on.

Kate Murashige, Partner, Morrison & Foerster LLP
(San Diego office)
Dr. Murashige has practiced law
since 1977, both in private practice and in corporate practice
at Syntex and later at Genentech. Dr. Murashige's practice
focuses on the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. She
is a member of the AAAS committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility. Recently,
Dr. Murashige was selected as a top attorney by her peers in
The Best Lawyers in America 2007® in the field of biotechnology
law. In 2006, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award
from Washington University in St. Louis for attaining distinction
in her professional career and for having demonstrated service
to the community and the university.
Dr. Murashige has taught college
chemistry and was Physical Sciences Chairperson of the College
of San Mateo for six years. She was a member of the former
National Biotechnology Policy Board for NIH and is a past chairperson
of the Biotechnology Committee of the American Intellectual Property
Law Association. She has been an invited speaker at the Human
Genome Conference on patent matters and has been an advisor on
gene patenting to the OTA. She has spoken before Members
of Congress and their staffs regarding the Human Genome Project.
