SUBJECT: Life Cycle of a Biotechnology Company: Opportunities & Pitfalls for Licensing Executives

In the world of drug development it can take a biotechnology company 12-15 years and $1BB to take a drug from concept to successful market introduction. During its life cycle, a biotechnology company will move from applied research, to drug development, to clinical development, and finally to manufacturing, sales, and marketing. Each stage has both challenges and opportunities which are key to the survival/success of the company. This presentation will provide an overview of the life cycle of a typical biotechnology company from start-up to mature company, and discuss the key issues which affect each stage in the life cycle.

Licensing and partnerships are essential tools in the development of a successful biotechnology company. This presentation will examine where the opportunities for licensing and partnerships occur in the life cycle and the pros & cons of using these tools at each stage in the life cycle.

The presentation will conclude with a case study of a local biotechnology company looking at the licensing and partnership decisions they have made during their development to date.
