LES Vancouver Chapter Meeting

EFFECTIVE INTELLECTUAL ASSET MANAGEMENT: GROWING PATENT PORTFOLIOS AND DEVELOPING INVENTORS.

The Vancouver chapter of the LICENSING EXECUTIVES SOCIETY invites all LES members and friends to a workshop on Intellectual Property portfolio management strategies for high technology companies, featuring both US and Canadian Intellectual Asset Management specialists and experienced corporate IP managers.

This will be the inaugural event for the new LES Vancouver chapter Intellectual Asset Management interest group. The purpose of this new group is to promote discussion, development, and practical application of intellectual property law from the business perspective. We will aim to create a peer based group from innovation-based companies that will act as a forum to present, share and exchange ideas and best practices within the intellectual property management field.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Professionals in a role as Intellectual Property manager or people planning a career in the field. Of interest also to R&D directors, in-house counsel, patent administrators and CEO’s of start up companies.

The day will end with an interactive panel discussion including all speakers. Peter Cowan of Power Measurement Ltd. and David Todd of Isentient Technologies Corp. will introduce the program and announce plans for the new LES IAM group.

By David Fisch, Director, Engineering Programs, TAEUS, and
Jeff Carter, Principal, HighTech-Solutions, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

  • Best practices and basic strategies for managing the of IP portfolio
  • Metrics for dynamic analysis of the IP portfolio for assessing opportunities and assisting decision making.

David Fisch has a BS degree in Physics from Case (CWRU) and an MS EE from Southern Methodist University. He has over 23 years of experience in the semiconductor memory field with expertise ranging from device physics to DRAM circuit design. David also has extensive management experience and was previously the Vice President of Engineering for Ramtron International Corporation. David has 6 patents in his name and has published numerous technical papers.

Jeff Carter has over 12 years of experience in the technology analysis and intellectual property industry. Jeff was a program manager for the Motorola Semiconductor Product Sector Intellectual Property department for five and a half years, helping transition the department to a profit and loss business. While at Motorola Jeff implemented a patent harvesting process that has enabled the licensing teams to strengthen the patent and technology licensing programs.

As a telecommunications and open source expert, Jeff is responsible for the offensive and defensive technical positions in technologies such as ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), Bluetooth, 802.11a b & g, SWP (sliding window protocol), WAP (wireless application protocol), CDMA 2000 1xRTT, GSM, Perl, PHP, MySQL, and Linux.

An Integrated Approach to IP Management for High Tech Growth Companies

Based on her experience at Ballard and more recently with a number of other high tech companies, Cindy will provide some insights on managing an expanding IP portfolio. Cindy will talk about how IP management can be integrated into a corporate technology and product development process. Cindy will also discuss how the corporate IP strategy may evolve as a high tech company moves through different stages of its growth, highlighting how the priorities and objectives of an IP program may shift over time. Cindy will also review some of the ways companies can go about extracting value from their IP assets.

Cindy Longley operates an Intellectual Property (IP) consulting business, providing advice on IP strategy and management to a range of high technology companies. Until 2004 Cindy was the Director of IP at Ballard Power Systems. Over the course of 9 years at Ballard, Cindy managed Ballard’s IP portfolio as it grew from about 150 to over 1700 patents and patent applications. During this time Ballard evolved from a R&D-based organization to a larger company manufacturing and shipping its first commercial products. Cindy was responsible for defining Ballard’s IP strategy, and for leading a team of in-house IP professionals and managing outside counsel. Prior to joining Ballard in 1995, Cindy worked for a pharmaceutical start-up company where she was responsible for the synthetic chemistry laboratory and became involved in IP management. Cindy holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Imperial College, London

IP Development and Management: the PMC-Sierra Approach

Dr. Andrew S. Wright is the Director of Product Research at PMC-Sierra and currently focuses on developing sustaining wireless technology developments. Prior to joining PMC-Sierra, Dr. Wright was the co-founder and CTO of Datum Telegraphic, a company specializing in signal processing solutions for 3G wireless systems.

Dr. Wright has authored numerous IEEE journal articles and patents. He is also a member of the IEEE.

Creation and Implementation of Policy and Procedures for IP Management.
By Susan Tees, Senior Director, Intellectual Property and Contracts, OncoGenex Technologies Inc., Vancouver.

Susan Tees is has managed intellectual property for several Vancouver biotechnology companies, including QLT Inc. (in its earlier days), Inex Pharmaceuticals, Corp., and Kinetek Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,  to name a few.  She recently spent 2.5 years at Smart & Biggar, Fetherstonhaugh studying Canadian patent law and providing patent management and patent prosecution services to smaller clients.  

Susan has passed both the United States Patent bar exam and the Canadian Patent exam, and is qualified as a patent agent in both jurisdictions.

Susan will provide a check list of the types of policies and procedures that should be considered to protect and control IP in a biotechnology company, the types of problems that can arise without such policies, and tips for setting up policies and procedures in established companies.
