Vancouver Chapter Prior Event
LES Vancouver Chapter Meeting
The Vancouver chapter of the LICENSING EXECUTIVES
SOCIETY invites all LES members and friends to a presentation
entitled "In
Defense of 'Patent Trolls' - Views from the Perspective of a Contingent-Fee Patent
Litigator".
DATE: Thurs., Dec., 1, 2005.
TIME: 12:00 to 1:30 - Lunch, presentation, and questions.
PLACE: McCarthy Tetrault, Boardroom
Suite 1300 - 777
Dunsmuir Street, Pacific Centre
SPEAKER: Philip
P. Mann, Founder and Principal Member of Mann Law Group, Seattle.
SUBJECT: So-called "patent
trolls," i.e., people and companies who own patents and seek royalties from
others without making a product of their own, are under attack. They are blamed for everything from
clogging the courts, to increasing consumer costs, to stifling innovation. Are
these attacks justified? Let's
hear now from the other side of the issue and why everyone benefits from
a strong, predictable patent system. Philip P. Mann will address
the notions of why the myth of the "patent troll" is counterproductive
and provide insights
into the minds and motivations of contingent-fee IP lawyers and their clients.
Mr. Mann is the founder and principal member of the Seattle-based
Mann Law Group, a firm dedicated to providing contingent-fee and other
practical alternatives to high-cost hourly billing in patent and other intellectual property disputes. A
trial lawyer with over twenty years experience in all aspects of patent
and IP practice, Mr. Mann was most recently a member of Christensen O'Connor
Johnson Kindness in Seattle before forming the Mann Law Group in July,
2004. He received his Bachelors Degree in Electrical
Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1977.
