laws and how to maximize cross-border protection. This will be the second-to-last presentation
before we break for the summer (see “Upcoming Events” list below).

Professionals in with an
interest in high technology licensing, technology transfer, and intellectual
property administration.
SPEAKER INFORMATION: Despite similarities in
the patent legislation of Canada and
the United States, significant
differences now exist and understanding these differences can help Canadian
companies to ensure that their patent strategy is geared towards a global
expansion that includes the United States. Laurie Axford, Christopher
Robinson, and Andrew Annuar will discuss some of the similarities and differences
between Canadian and U.S. practice,
with a particular emphasis on helpful considerations for Canadian companies
to enhance patentability and facilitate prosecution in the United States.
Laurie Axford is a partner
at Burns, Doane, Swecker and Mathis LLP, located in California,
where she represents both U.S. and
Canadian companies seeking patent protection in the U.S. Christopher Robinson
is a partner at Smart & Biggar/Fetherstonhaugh, Vancouver, with extensive
experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications relating to biotech. Andrew
Annuar is the Intellectual Property Manager at Langley-based biopharmaceutical
company, AnorMED, Inc. where he focuses on the management of the company’s
intellectual property portfolio, including the facilitation of patent prosecution
in Canada and the U.S. by outside law firms.
