SPEAKER INFORMATION:
Tony McArthur
will discuss the business, legal, and cultural aspects of doing business
in Japan and/or with Japanese
companies. Japan has
the second largest economy in the world and a booming technology sector. However,
doing business in Japan is
not the same as doing business in North America. Tony
will discuss aspects of doing business in Japan that might not be immediately apparent
to North American businesses. Tony will discuss differences in laws,
cultural expectations/practices, typical corporate/decision-making structures
and processes, and other realities about doing business in Japan, and provide tips and guidance about how
to do business in Japan and/or
with Japanese companies.
Tony is the
founding partner of Davis & Company’s Tokyo office,
and currently divides his time about equally between Davis & Company’s Tokyo
and Vancouver offices. Tony practices in the area of business law,
including mergers and acquisitions, international commercial transactions,
and finance, particularly with respect to Canada-Japan commerce and investment. Tony
resided in Japan for
approximately 8 years and speaks Japanese; during his residency in Japan, Tony has worked exclusively in
the area of international business and financial transactions. In
1996, he was admitted to practise Canadian and international law in Japan and established Davis & Company’s Tokyo office. Davis & Company is the
only Canadian law firm with an office in Japan, although it has been
providing legal services to its Japanese clients for over 50 years. Davis & Company’s Tokyo
office assists Japanese companies with their business overseas, and North
American companies with their business in Japan.
