Vancouver Chapter Prior Event
LES Vancouver Chapter Meeting
The Vancouver chapter of the LICENSING EXECUTIVES SOCIETY invites all
LES members and friends to a presentation on the art and science of wine on September
22, 2005, the first day of autumn. This will be the kick-off event for our 2005-2006
season (see “Upcoming Events” list below).
DATE: Thursday,
September 22, 2005
TIME: 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm
VENUE: The Law Courts
Inn
5th Floor, B.C. Supreme Court Building
800 Smithe Street, Vancouver, BC
SPEAKER #1: Dr.
Hennie J. van Vuuren, a wine biotechnologist and the Director of UBC’s Wine
Research Centre, will discuss wine-related research projects being conducted
at UBC – both with respect to enology (study of wine) and viticulture (study
of the vine). Dr. van Vuuren co-ordinates multidisciplinary research
that is already helping growers and vintners enhance production and quality
through the UBC Wine Research Centre’s research on genomics of wine and yeasts. This
powerful technology is being used to study how the winemaking process affects
the expression of genes in the yeast cell. By changing winemaking conditions,
winemakers can maximize the aromatic complexity and minimize the production
of volatile acids, and prevent sluggish and stuck fermentations which lead
to spoilage of wines. Dr. van Vuuren holds patents which include a
highly successful yeast strain that has been licensed to international wine
companies, and he and his students have received several awards for research
excellence.
SPEAKER #2: Maxxium
Worldwide has generously agreed to provide and lead
a wine tasting of 6-8 different wines. Maxxium Worldwide, a partnership
of The Edrington Group, Jim Beam Brands, Remy Cointreau and the V&S
Group, is responsible for the sales, local marketing and distribution of
many of the world’s premium spirits and wine brands.
COST: $35
for LES members, $45 for non members (the wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres
are covered in this cost).
