Chair, LES HCS
- Grandfathering Process for the new LES Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) certification program.
If you attended the Annual Meeting in Vancouver, you already know all about the new LES sponsored Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) program. But for those of you who couldn’t make the meeting, the CLP program is a new professional designation sponsored by LES intended to distinguish those who have demonstrated experience, proficiency, knowledge and understanding of licensing and commercialization of intellectual property. Those of us involved in the leadership of the Health Care Sector are very excited about this program for a number of reasons. First and foremost, our vocation is highly specialized, and yet there really isn’t any standard for specific education or experience. Earning the CLP designation will be a point of differentiation for those seeking entry into our profession.
Now we realize a question some of you more seasoned members may be asking is, “So what is in it for me? Why should I bother with the CLP?”
Well, for those of us in positions of “Corporate Development” or “Business Development”, we have long seen these titles uses as euphemisms for thing well beyond licensing and collaborations....everything from product sales to investor relations roles. Holding a CLP is a way for us to further separate ourselves from the noise and highlighting our licensing credentials. And when it comes time for asking for a raise or finding that next job, data clearly shows that professionals who obtain certifications are in more demand and get paid more than their functionary peers who do not! And the data also suggests more job security for those who may not be seeking to make a move!
Bottom line: it’s good for your career & our profession! So do it!
The first full class will be in 2008, will require a proficiency examination and other criteria, and cost $995 to apply.
BUT, FOR A VERY LIMITED TIME, there is a one time only grandfathering opportunity for those with exceptional experience.
THE DEADLINE for the GRANDFATHERING APPLICATIONS is December 31, 2007. Cost for applying via the Grandfathering Process is ½ the standard method (only $495), and there is NO TEST, but requires you’ve met specific criteria and need three professional references.
More details on the program, including the criteria and application for the Grandfathering Process, can be found here: www.lesclp.org. Should you meet the criteria for CLP Grandfathering, but needing help to find your three professional references, feel free to contact me (jjschaible@san.rr.com) or others on the HCS leadership by December 20th, and we’ll try to match you up with others who can support your application.
- Call for Workshop Proposals for the LES 2008 Annual Meeting in Orlando. DEADLINE: January 15, 2008
It’s that time of year again! Seems the Annual Meeting has just finished, but already we are well down the road for planning for your LES 2008 Annual Meeting, to take place October 19-23, 2008 at the luxurious Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Kissimmee (Orlando), Florida. More details on the meeting as planned so far can be found here: http://www.usa-canada.les.org/meetings/2008annual/. If you are not familiar with the property, it’s quite a location, with ample space conductive for education and networking...and ample diversions for you and your guests.
Your Sector, under the exceptional leadership of HCS Meeting Chair Cat Oyler, is actively involved again to assure the same higher standards of quality and quantity of educational content, as you may have seen at the last two LES Annual Meetings. And we are an extending an invitation to you, the members of the Sector, for proposals for workshop topics. More information on submitting proposals, as well as the online submission tool can be found here: http://www.usa-canada.les.org/eventscalendar/proposalguideannual08.asp. Again, the deadline for online submissions is January 15, 2008.
- Vancouver 2007 Annual Meeting Recap
It brings me great pleasure to report that the Vancouver Annual Meeting was a huge success. Over 1300 registered for the event, and of those reporting an industry sector affiliation 55% described themselves as participants in the Health Care industry. With the vast majority of the top twenty pharma and major biotech companies well represented, and our industry’s increased presence at this, the LES Annual Meeting is now truly a “must attend” on any biopharma licensing professionals calendar.
This meeting was the culmination of a solid year of leadership by our outgoing HCS Chair, Lauren Silvernail. Thank you Lauren for all your hard work. And Lauren joins me as we’d especially like to recognize the exceptional efforts of the HCS Meeting Chair for this event, Mark Nawacki, who given this great success was selected as Chair-Elect of the HCS. And we’d like to also thank all presenters, including but not limited to plenary speakers Barbara Yanni of Merck & Company, Darcy Toms of Axcan Scandipharm Inc., and James Watson of Burrill & Company, as well as health care mini-plenary speakers Ed Saltzman of Defined Health and Mark Edwards of Recombinant Capital.
Congratulations again go out to our sector’s 2007 LES Deals of Distinction Awards™ recipients, Affymax Inc and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited for their Global Partnership on Hematide™ (an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent). We’d also like to highlight the Healthcare related awards given by The Consumer Products Sector to Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer, Inc. for the J&J Acquisition of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare group, and The Industry/University and Government Laboratory Transactions Sector to The Mayo Clinic and the University of Chicago for their UGT1A1 Human Gene Diagnostics Licensing Program. More information including the press release describing all the 2007 awards, and the online submission for 2008 awards can be found here: http://www.usa-canada.les.org/dda.asp.
A big thanks also goes out to Gayle Kirkpatrick who helped organized our Mini-Plenary, Ruth Plager and Michael Lerner who pulled together a terrific Add-On Program, Imma Barrera who oversaw the selection and production of all health care workshops, Linda Johnson who coordinated the our sector specific social activities, Pam Demain who lead the very successful Power Networking partnering forum, and to all the many, many other volunteers for this meeting.
Finally, the Healthcare Sector is proud to announce that at this meeting one of our own - former Chair of the HCS Tom Picone - has been elected to serve as President of LES (USA & Canada) for a one year term. Congratulations Tom!
- 2007 Pharma Royalty Survey Initiative.
The last item this quarter is a unique opportunity. Our sector has the privilege to be conducting a detailed and confidential survey of royalty rates and deal terms in the biopharma industry. It has been over ten years since the last time such an ambitious undertaking was attempted by LES, and we foresee these survey results as an important reference for our industry in helping to establish benchmarks and comparables for new deals. A significant amount of LES money and volunteer efforts, lead by Jim McCarthy, is being applied to this initiative, so we are asking anyone involved with significant biopharma deals in the past year to consider making a confidential submission. To protect anonymity, participation is by coordinated by our survey vendor, so if you would like to have your company participate, or at least wish to learn more about it, please email Rachel Dobis at Veris [rdobis@verisconsulting.com]. All participants will get an advance copy of the results. It is our hope to draw the survey to a close by the end of December.
