A Message from your LES Health Care Sector (HCS) Chair
February 13, 2008
Dear fellow members of the LES HCS,
Hello! I’m Jake Schaible, Chair of the HCS for the 2007-8 term.
Your sector leadership team has been very busy, with many meeting planning and membership recruitment activities going on behind the scenes. However, we thought you might appreciate a quick highlight of some of the key and more time sensitive topics which may be of interest to you personally:
- It’s that time of year again! If you have not done so already, now is the time to RENEW your membership in LES.
Please be aware that the deadline for retention as an active member and in our 2008 listings is the 29th of February.
- Share LES with a peer or newbie! Spring is a GREAT TIME to recruit your friends and peers to LES.
- Early Registration Deadline for the LESI Annual/LES Spring Meeting (Chicago) ends the 15th of February, THIS FRIDAY.
- You or another member of your department seeking some training? Also going to the BIO International Conventionin San Diego?
Consider attending the BIO/LES Basics of Business Development Course!
If any of these topics are of interest – and we hope they are - then you can find more details below.
Otherwise, until our Summer Blast, have a productive start to your 2008, from all of us on the HCS Leadership Team!
Best regards,
Jake Schaible

- Time to renew your membership in LES.
Hopefully, as a member of the LES HCS, you have noted our dedication and the hard work of many of your peer volunteers to improve the quality of networking and educational content within the Health Care Sector components at our recent meetings and communications. For a full membership cost of just $225 per year, we are proud to be able to afford you access to all the benefits of our society, including but not limited to subscription to our ViewPoints newsletter and les Nouvelles (the leading scholarly journal in the field of licensing) our new and improved membership database, our improving webpage and job board, and ability for you and your firm to participate in the many recognition and awards programs we sponsor.
But please be aware that the deadline for retention as an active member and in our 2008 listings is the 29th of February.
Remember if you attend just ONE of our major meetings per year, membership pays for itself in registration savings! Members can very simply renew in various ways at http://www.usa-canada.les.org/membership/ Takes less than a minute!
- Share LES with a peer or newbie! Aren’t our meetings more fun when your industry friends are there? Spring is a GREAT TIME to recruit your friends and peers to LES.
We are a volunteer society – so the health of your LES is the duty of each one of us. As such, please consider providing a copy of our application to those you thing may have an interest in it: http://www.usa-canada.les.org/pdfs/2007membershipapplication.pdf We would be very happy to answer any questions they may have.
Is there a person in your department that has recently been hired or transferred into the field of licensing from some other discipline?
(Might I suggest you forward them this email, with your note of encouragement to join LES?)
- Early Registration Deadline for the LESI Annual/LES Spring Meeting (Chicago) ENDS THIS FRIDAY.
If you’ve had a chance to review the scheduled program, you already know that it will have a large amount of high quality Healthcare Industry content. And I’ll let you in on a secret – it will be even better than now described, as we have just added a keynote session to report the results of the LES BioPharma Survey, the largest and most comprehensive royalty and deal term survey conducted in our industry in over a decade.
Also, given this year LES has combined the LES Spring and Winter meetings, plus the LES International Annual Meeting into one event, it promises to be a much more substantial meeting than regular LES "seasonal meetings" you may have attended in the past.
So register now to join me, as well as Rob McInnes, Chair of the LESI Life Science Committee, a host of exceptional leaders in our industry from around the world who have agreed to speak, and the large number of your licensing peers who will be attending in Chicago. And in doing so save yourself or your company $400 (over the cost of onsite registration).
More registration information can be found here: http://www.usa-canada.les.org/meetings/2008spring/ Registrations submitted via fax or the internet must be date/time stamped by February 15 at 11:59 p.m. eastern time.
- The BIO/LES "Basics of Business Development" Course comes to San Diego!
Held June 14-16, 2008, just prior to and in conjunction with the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) International Convention, the jointly sponsored BIO/LES "Basics of Business Development" is the preeminent survey course of the basic skills required of Business Development Professionals in our industry.
For just $1295 for LES Members, this intensive and interactive three day course, taught by a host of industry experts, has always been a crowd pleaser. But it’s "first come/first served", and has been a sell out more often than not, so be sure to reserve your space today! More details on the course can be found at http://www.usa-canada.les.org/biobusdevbasics/.
