Committee Mission Statement:

  • Provide a forum for education, discussion, and networking for LES members interested in the technology transfer and licensing of Biomedical Device-related technologies.
  • Foster collaboration within the Biomedical Device industry and between this multidisciplinary industry and related technical fields, e.g., pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nanotechnology, diagnostics, and imaging, etc.
  • Investigate and present issues important to the Biomedical Device industry through LES publications and live content provided at LES meetings.
  • Introduce and champion LES and LES membership to the Biomedical Device community.
Objectives:
  • Explore the multidisciplinary nature of the Biomedical Device industry with an emphasis on finding specific areas for collaboration and differentiation.
  • Investigate the changes and evolution of patenting, licensing, and regulatory/marketing strategies employed in the Biomedical Device industry.
  • Examine the impact of public policy issues on the Biomedical Device industry, with particular emphasis on patenting, regulation, and third-party payer initiatives.
  • Develop live content programming for the LES Meetings and recruit speakers for these programs.
Detailed Joint Biomedical Device Committee Plan (Working Draft: Dec. 2006):

I. Definitions

Historically, the problem with biomedical/bioengineering has been the inability to establish a clear and comprehensive identity due to its cross-disciplinary nature. There is a vast nexus between basic physical engineering and application of that science to medical and biological systems. The formation of a separate biomedical device committee will bring into focus a clear identity while facilitating workflow and cooperation between the High Technology (HT) and Healthcare (HC) Sectors. As part of that, the committee Co-chairs propose adopting a working definition of "biomedical device/bioengineering" promulgated by the American Institute of Medical Bioengineering (AIMBE): "medical and biological engineering encompasses the fields of clinical medicine, food, agriculture and environmental bioremediation". This definition can be added/modified/changed or adopted according to the committee's suggestions and/or recommendations.

II. Objectives

  1. Create a platform to share best practices, current standards, and trends in licensing and IP management for medical and biological engineering;
  2. Network between industry-specific contacts and coordinate a constituency of biomedical/bioengineering practitioners;
  3. Focus on trends and the future outlook for the biomedical device field;
  4. Increase and recruit LES (and Biomedical Device Committee) membership;
  5. Outline reimbursement strategies within the industry;
  6. Facilitate the chartering of the Joint Biomedical Device Committee; and
  7. Introduce the LES Membership to the Joint Biomedical Device Committee through various media.
III. Leadership Structure

The Biomedical Device Committee shall be a joint committee of the High Technology (HT) and Healthcare (HC) Sectors. Once the nascent Committee has been existence for the appropriate amount of time, each Sector shall be represented by a Co-Chair, a Co-Chair-Elect, and a Past Co-Chair. All Co-Chairs will endeavor to work cooperatively and efficiently to facilitate the functioning of the Committee.

The respective inaugural HT Sector and HC Sector Co-Chairs are:
