Fundamentals is an intensive 3½-day course that provides the
foundation for the entire LES Professional Development Series.
Participants receive a Certificate of Completion after attending all four components of the Fundamentals course.
- Who is the intended audience?
Intellectual asset management professionals, including those responsible for licensing and business development, who want to increase their knowledge of licensing and raise their professional skill level, are the intended audience.
- Who teaches this course?
Courses are taught by a distinguished faculty of experienced professionals in the licensing field who are members of the Licensing Executives Society. Instructors conduct sessions in their individual specialities.
- What are the main topics covered?
This 100-level course comprises four major topics:
- IAM 101: The Basics of Intellectual Property and Licensing (including language and principles)
- IAM 102: Filling and Managing the Portfolio (including planning, tech transfer criteria, and strategies)
- IAM 103: The Deal (including pre-valuation and tax issues, valuation methods, and negotiation techniques and principles)
- IAM 104: Living with the Deal (including post-agreement relationships and compliance, and the process of managing intellectual assets).
- What pre-requisite skills and knowledge are expected of participants?
None. This course is the introductory level, although many participants already have some experience in the field.
- What will participants learn/be able to do at the end of the course?
Participants learn basic concepts and skills. At the end of the course, participants will be able to use the fundamental language of intellectual property and licensing and understand how to develop an intellectual asset management process. They will be able to identify basic legal and ethical issues; assess needs, opportunities, and risks; establish criteria for technology transfer; and follow a process for technology transfer, including finding and qualifying prospects, and negotiating and closing a deal.
- Is this course part of a series or a standalone?
This course is the introductory level of the Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) program in the LES Professional Development Series. Fundamentals is an intensive 3½-day course offered in various cities in the US. At the Intermediate and Advanced levels, additional courses and supporting workshops build on the foundational knowledge gained in Fundamentals.
- What is the instructional format?
The Fundamentals Course is interactive, making use of small-group activities with exercises drawn from real-world experiences, as well as lecture. In addition, participants may be asked to complete some readings and activities outside class for use in classroom activities.
- Is this course open to both LES members and non-members?
Yes. Both LES members and nonmembers may attend, although LES members receive a discount on the tuition fee.
- How do participants register?
Participants may register online or by completing a paper form and mailing or faxing it to the LES headquarters office. Pre-registrants receive a discount. Registration is limited to 70 participants at each location, so early registration is encouraged.
- How much does the course cost?
The course fee for LES members is US $1295 (before the published cutoff date), US $1525 (after the published cutoff date). Nonmember prices are US $1550/$1750. Course materials, continental breakfasts, lunches, and one evening reception are included in the tuition fee.
The volunteer spirit of LES members who contribute their professional time and expertise to create and deliver these educational programs helps keep the cost reasonable.
- When/how often is this course offered?
In 2008, Fundamentals is scheduled to be offered twice:
- March 3-6 in San Francisco, CA;
- July 14-17, Toronto, Ontario CANADA
- What types of academic credit options/CEUs are available to participants?
In the US, attorneys can apply for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits through their state bar associations. LES seeks prior approval for the course in the states in which it is offered, if the state has an MCLE requirement. Otherwise, a Uniform Certificate of Attendance form will be provided on LES letterhead for the attorney to submit when applying for CLE credit through the appropriate state bar association(s).
LES has been designated a preferred provider by the State Bar of California, and the Fundamentals course has been approved for 22.25 MCLE credits. The State Bar of Colorado has approved the Fundamentals course for 27 hours. The Supreme Court of Ohio has approved the Fundamentals course for 22.5 hours. The Supreme Court of Wisconsin has approved the Toronto Fundamentals course for 27 hours.
- What type of help is available following completion of the course?
Besides the networking opportunities that provide collegial support throughout one's career in licensing, additional support is available through other LES members, educational information and articles available online, and the LES headquarters staff.
- How and how often is the course evaluated/reviewed/revised?
Fundamentals of Intellectual Asset Management was developed in 1999-2000 and piloted in 2001. It is evaluated on an ongoing basis, reviewed annually, and revised based on member needs, best practices in adult learning, emerging trends, and developments in the field of licensing.
- What is the LES Attendance Policy?
All registrants are expected to arrive at least five minutes before the stated starting time and to participate for the entire session. At the end of each day's session, each participant who wishes to receive credit toward meeting the Professional Development Series program requirements will receive a two-part attendance card showing the name and date of the course. The LES staff member in the classroom will retain the original as the official attendance record. Attendance cards may not be issued to participants who arrive late or depart before the conclusion of the course, or are absent for a significant period of time.
