July 14-17, 2008 - Toronto, Ontario Canada

IAM 2008 Brochure (PDF)

Intermediate IAM is an intensive four-day course for those with three or more years of experience or who have completed Fundamentals. Additional supporting PDS Workshops, covering the special topics required for completing this level, are offered in conjunction with LES seasonal and annual meetings to support and extend the initial learning. A Certificate of Completion is issued upon completion of both the Intermediate course and PDS Workshop requirements.

  1. Who is the intended audience?

    Intellectual asset management professionals, including those responsible for licensing and business development, who want to increase their knowledge of licensing and raise their professional skill level, comprise the intended audience. Typically this group includes licensing/technology transfer executives, intellectual asset managers, financial analysts, and patent attorneys.

  2. What are the main topics covered?

    This 200-level course comprises six major topics during the four days:

    • Legal & Licensing Issues
    • IA Strategy
    • Valuation of Intellectual Assets
    • Negotiation
    • Ethics

    In addition, participants taking the courses for a Certificate of Completion must complete four different specialized PDS Workshops offered in conjunction with LES seasonal and annual meetings. These PDS Workshops are numbered to coincide with the course numbers and content as listed above, but each one lasts approximately three hours. The workshops extend the learning that takes place during the actual Intermediate course. LES strongly recommends that students complete at least one PDS Workshop in Valuation and that non-attorneys complete at least one PDS Legal Workshop in addition to the course.

  3. What prerequisite skills and knowledge are expected of participants?

    The prerequisites may be met in either of two ways:

    • Completion of the Fundamentals of Intellectual Asset Management course (IAM 101-104),

      or

    • Three years' licensing and intellectual asset management experience and a demonstrated understanding of the fundamental principles in Negotiation, Valuation, IA Strategy and Intellectual Property Law. For information about qualifying for the Intermediate course, contact Dr. Vicki Hancock, LES Education Director, at LES headquarters. Permission of the LES Education Director is required prior to enrolling in the Intermediate course for participants who have not completed Fundamentals.

  4. What will participants learn/be able to do at the end of the course?

    Participants will understand terms and concepts relating to protection of intellectual property from both legal and business views. At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • read and analyze a US patent file wrapper;
    • analyze difficult agreement provisions;
    • recognize an IA strategy that is actionable and aligned with corporate strategy;
    • interpret competitive data;
    • recognize assumptions and interpret an independent valuation report; and
    • conduct principled negotiations and apply ethical principles to the opportunities.

  5. Is this course part of a series or a stand-alone?

    This course is the intermediate level of the Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) program in the LES Professional Development Series. Intermediate IAM courses are offered in various cities in the US and occasionally in Canada. They build on the LES course completed at the Fundamentals level (101-104) and serve as prerequisites to the Advanced (300-level) courses.

    To receive a Certificate of Completion for the Intermediate level, students must also complete four different PDS Workshops in addition to the course.

  6. What is the Intermediate PDS Workshop Requirement?

    In addition to the four-day Intermediate course (201-205), participants wishing to complete the Intermediate level and receive a Certificate of Completion must attend a total of four PDS Workshops. (For example, it is permissible to participate in more than one PDS workshop on Licensing, but the workshop title and content should be different.)

    These interactive Workshops, offered three times per year in conjunction with LES annual and seasonal meetings, are intended to support and extend the learning from the course. The content of each Workshop aligns with that of one particular Intermediate course segment: Legal, IA Strategy, Valuation, Negotiation and Ethics, and Licensing. LES strongly recommends that all students complete at least one PDS Valuation Workshop and that all non-attorneys take at least one PDS Legal Workshop.

    There are no pre-requisites for attending these PDS Workshops, which are open to everyone. Students may attend PDS Workshops before or after attending courses. However, the content is at the Intermediate level, and class size is limited to 25 participants in each Workshop. There is usually no additional fee for these PDS Workshops other than paying the appropriate registration fees for LES seasonal and annual meetings.

  7. What is the instructional format?

    The Intermediate course is designed to be highly interactive, making use of small-group activities and exercises drawn from real-world experiences, as well as lecture. In addition, participants may be asked to complete some readings and activities outside class for use in classroom activities.

  8. Is this course open to both LES members and non-members?

    Yes.

  9. How do participants register?

    Participants can register online or by completing a paper form and mailing or faxing it to the LES office. Pre-registrants receive a discount. Registration is limited to 50 participants at each location. Visit the registration page for more information.

  10. How much does the course cost?

    The fee for LES members is US $1495 (before the published cutoff date), US $1525 (after the cutoff date). Non-member prices are US $1750/$1950. Course materials, continental breakfasts, lunches, and one evening reception are included in the registration fee.

    The volunteer spirit of LES members who contribute their professional time and expertise to create and deliver these educational programs helps keep the cost reasonable.

  13. What types of academic credit options/CEUs are available to participants?

    In the US, attorneys may apply for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits through their state bar associations. LES seeks prior approval for the course in the states in which it is offered, if the state has an MCLE requirement. Otherwise, a Uniform Certificate of Attendance form will be provided on LES letterhead for the attorney to submit when applying for CLE credit through the appropriate state bar association(s).

    LES has been designated a preferred provider by the State Bar of California, and the Intermediate course has been approved for 25.0 MCLE credits, including 3.0 Ethics credits. The State Bar of Colorado has approved the Intermediate course for 29 hours, including 1.8 hours of Ethics credits. The Supreme Court of Ohio has approved the Intermediate course for 27.0 credit hours, including 1.5 hours of Ethics credit. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has approved the Intermediate course for 26.5 credit hours, including 2.0 hours of Ethics credit. The Supreme Court of Wisconsin has approved the Intermediate course for 31.5 hours, including 1.5 ethics hours.

  14. What type of help is available following completion of the course?

    Besides the networking opportunities that provide collegial support throughout one's career in licensing, additional support is available through other LES members, educational information and articles available online, and the LES headquarters staff.

  15. How and how often is the course evaluated/reviewed/revised?

    Intermediate Intellectual Asset Management was newly developed and piloted in 2001. It is evaluated on an ongoing basis, reviewed annually, and revised based on member needs, emerging trends, and developments in the field of licensing.

  16. What is the LES Attendance Policy?

    All registrants are expected to arrive at least five minutes before the stated starting time and to participate for the entire session. At the end of each day's session, each participant who wishes to receive credit toward meeting the Professional Development Series program requirements will receive a two-part attendance form showing the name and date of the course. The LES staff member in the classroom will retain the original as the official attendance record. Attendance cards may not be issued to participants who arrive late or depart before the conclusion of the course, or are absent for a significant period of time.
