The distinguished faculty who teach the seminar are experienced professionals in the licensing field and members of the Licensing Executives Society. Instructors conduct sessions in their individual specialties.
- What are the main topics covered?
These seminars cover the essentials of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets as well as alternate dispute resolution, negotiating techniques, university-industry relations, opportunity assessment, ethical responsibilities of attorneys, due diligence valuation, and merger and acquisition considerations.
- What pre-requisite skills and knowledge are expected of participants?
Since this seminar is at the introductory level, participants are not expected to have any prior knowledge.
- What will participants learn/be able to do at the end of the course?
Participants will gain a basic knowledge of the essential elements of licensing.
- Is this course part of a series or a stand-alone?
This seminar is a stand-alone course. It is sometimes the first course that new LES members take, and they often continue taking other LES educational programs like the Professional Development Series courses and workshops.
- What is the instructional format?
The format is primarily lecture with opportunities for question and answer. In addition, LES provides networking opportunities and an informal atmosphere for interaction with instructors and other licensing colleagues.
- Is this course open to both LES members and non-members?
Yes. Both members and non-members may participate.
- How do participants register?
Participants may register online through the LES website: www.usa-canada.les.org or by completing a paper form. Pre-registrants receive a discount. Registration is limited to 100 participants at each location.
- How much does the course cost?
The fee for LES members is US $995 (before the cutoff date), US $1195 (after the cutoff date). Nonmember prices are US $1250/$1550. Student materials, continental breakfast and lunch for both days are included in the fee, as well as a networking reception at the end of the first day.
The volunteer spirit of LES members who contribute their professional time and expertise to these educational programs helps keep the cost reasonable.

- What types of academic credit options/CEUs are available to participants?
In the US, attorneys can apply for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits through their state bar associations. A Uniform Certificate of Attendance form will be provided on LES letterhead for the attorney to submit when applying for CLE credit through the appropriate state bar association(s). LES is an approved provider of MCLE credit in California and has been granted 12.25 hours including 1.0 Ethics hours for attendance in the entire two-day TTS course.
- What type of help is available following completion of the course?
Besides the networking opportunities that provide collegial support throughout one’s career in licensing, additional support is available through other LES members, educational information and articles available online, and the LES headquarters staff.
- How and how often is the course evaluated/reviewed/revised?
The LES Technology Transfer Seminar was revised for 2006. It will be evaluated on an ongoing basis, reviewed annually, and revised based on member needs, best practices in adult learning, emerging trends, and developments in the field of licensing.
