E-118 Strategic Alliances

2003 Annual Plan

The Committee, which was formed in 1994, has about 125 members. It is membered by professionals from all industry sector within LES, with significant participation by IT, Chemicals & Polymers, as well as a companies of varying size and type in the pharma and biotech sectors. This profile has been consistent over the life of the Committee, as the Committee has sought to attract members from across industry sectors and to avoid being dominated by Health Care companies, which has a large and active committee. The Committee continues to reach out to prospective members, at mid-year and other regional meetings and will continue to do so in 2003. Regrettably, last year was the first year in which we experienced a decrease in membership, despite the number of events sponsored by the Committee.

Because alliances, both R&D and commercial, remain hot topics in the licensing world, the CommitteeÕs principal focus over the last year and the coming year is to offer educational events. In 2002, the Committee offered a workshop and a day-long Add-On Seminar at the winter and annual meeting, respectively. Both were well attended, with at least 75 attendees at each. In 2003, the Committee is co-sponsoring an Add-On with the Health Care Committee at the Spring Meeting, and will be sponsoring a day-long Add-On at the Annual Meeting in San Diego. The Committee continues to invite members to participate in these events, and we are pleased to report that four of the seven speakers were LES members, including three Committee members. At the San Diego meeting, we expect to have the European Director of Business Development of Bristol-Meyers speak, as well as representatives from several smaller companies, on the subject of transatlantic alliances.

At the Annual Meeting, the Committee elected a new President-Elect, Robert Moran, of Plexus Ventures, a multinational bioscience consultancy firm. Mr. Moran was formerly with GlaxoSmithKline, as a senior business development official, and, as a result, brings a wealth of knowledge and contacts both within and outside LES. Mr. Kostopulos will step down as President at the Annual Meeting, after serving for three years.

The Committee has also committed itself to using the LES website more than in the past year, as a means to publicize upcoming events sponsored by our Committee and other events on the subject of alliances.

Our goals for the coming year are to increase our membership by at least 50 and to communicate directly with our Members more via email and the Web-page.
