PDS Workshops
Each of the Professional Development Series (PDS) Workshops meets one of the PDS
Workshop Requirements for completing the Intermediate level of the Series. It is also open to
all meeting attendees on a space-available basis. Because class size is limited to 25, both PDS
students and other interested participants are asked to sign up for each of the Workshops
in advance by contacting Judy Walter (703-299-8211; jwalter@les.org). Tickets for any remaining spaces will be made available
at the LES Registration desk onsite at the Meeting. Visit the Education Section for more information about the Professional Development Series.

Portfolio Analysis/Risk
Assessment (IA STRATEGY)
Paul Germeraad
President, Intellectual Assets, Inc.
Portfolio analysis is a critical element
and one of the first steps in good intellectual
asset management. This workshop's
case study format explores a
sample portfolio in a hands-on manner,
identifying its strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats. During the
workshop, tools are used to explore the
portfolio from specific perspectives:
geographic scope; likely validity and
value in protecting the company's
ongoing business; likely size, depth
and breadth for licensing; likely sustainability,
and finally its direction versus
competitors. Knowing this information
allows the workshop participants
to recommend which art to
utilize as building blocks for further
R&D, which to license to others, and
which to donate or abandon. After this
hands-on experience, workshop participants
will be able to more productively
analyze, or re-analyze, their own
company's portfolio and confidently
recommend the appropriate actions to
be undertaken. Emphasis is placed on
understanding the business context in
which the portfolio can best create
value, as well as on tools and methods
that generate the most insight with the
least amount of time expended.

Licensing Federal Biomedical
Technology
(LICENSING)
Charles M. Maynard
Technology Transfer Specialist,
National Cancer Institute Technology
Transfer, National Institutes of Health
(NIH)
George H. Keller
Licensing Specialist, Office of
Technology Transfer, National Institutes
of Health (NIH)
Federal biomedical technology
development occurs primarily at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) and
the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
and the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) and to a lesser degree at various
government agencies. The range of
available technologies is vast, and in
addition, multiple licensing options
and other government opportunities
can greatly enhance the value of the
license agreement. There are also obligations
that accompany a federal biomedical
license agreement that potential
licensors may find unique. The
purpose of this interactive workshop
is to help participants overcome the
cultural challenges that exist in accessing
and acquiring available technologies
and other opportunities, principally
by the NIH through the Office of
Technology Transfer (OTT). This
Workshop is designed for the key
decision makers such as the business
development, legal and licensing
professionals to answer the question
"Once the technology is identified,
what are some key considerations in
achieving an effective partnership
through the licensing process?" After
completing this workshop, which will
include some case studies, participants
will be able to use new techniques to
improve and speed up the acquisition
of federal biomedical technology for
their institutions.

Implementing Valuation
Methods (VALUATION)
Robert Vigil
Vice President, Analysis Group, Inc.
Mohan P. Rao
Managing Director, Charles River
Associates
Penelope Bahn
Corporate Finance, Transaction Advisory Services, Ernst &
Young LLP
This interactive workshop, developed
in collaboration with the LES Valuation
Committee, will focus on implementing
advanced valuation methods. It
assumes that participants have a working
knowledge of the basic Income,
Cost and Market Approaches to IP
valuation. This workshop goes beyond
the basics through descriptions and
hands-on use of discounted cash flow
(DCF), Monte Carlo and Real Options
applications. Participants will explore
the relationship among these tools,
along with the strengths and shortcomings
of each, as well as commercial
and customized methods by which
to perform the analyses. In small
teams, participants will work through
applications of each tool and present
their results to the larger group for
comment and critique.
