U.S. Department of Energy Honored by
Licensing Executives Society for Its Leadership Role
in Technology Transfer and Commercialization
San Francisco, CA/February 12, 2004/Licensing Executives Society - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was awarded the Licensing Achievement Award today by the Licensing Executives Society U.S.A. and Canada (LES) at its 2004 Winter Meeting, in recognition of the Department's pioneering support of technology commercialization through licensing and technology transfer.
The Licensing Achievement Award is the highest honor bestowed by LES, to recognize leading organizations that promote intellectual property commercialization through licensing. Prior recipients of the award are Stanford University, Pfizer, and IBM Corporation.
The U.S. Department of Energy facilitates the exploitation of federally-funded research and development programs for the benefit of the American public. DOE laboratories and facilities support key national missions and are critical to high-technology industries and services. Technology collaboration between industry and DOE laboratories mutually leverages each partner's resources to meet common, compatible objectives.
DOE promotes the extension of its research through a network of national laboratories and other facilities which conduct research on a broad spectrum of energy-based technologies.
Recognized for its outstanding technology developments with commercial potential, DOE operates a database of more than 1500 patented inventions available for license to applicants with plans for commercial use.
The award was presented by LES Immediate Past President James Sobieraj, who acknowledged the productive working relationship between LES and DOE, including the most recent project to produce The Licensing Decision, a practical guide to licensing and technology commercialization designed for individuals and small businesses supported by the Department's Inventions & Innovations Program.
Accepting the award for the Department was Gary Drew, Lead Patent Attorney for the U.S. DOE field office in San Francisco.
The Licensing Executives Society (U.S.A. & Canada), Inc. is a professional society comprised of over 5,500 members who are involved in the transfer, use, development, manufacture and marketing of intellectual property, including professionals in the field of law, academics, science government and the private sector.
